"There is only one China. Taiwan is not independent. It does not enjoy sovereignty as a nation, and that remains our policy, our firm policy."I wonder how the founding fathers would rate an American govenment that supports communist slavery and promotes the death of freedom?

Colin Powell has outlived his usefulness as the Secretary of State. He is not being a team player at this point by undermining the President.

Are we ever going to see a campaign ad in China like this:
"Mao Zedong failed his mission. On his watch, thousands of antigovernment troops fled the nation to carry on their attacks. If we had enough troops, or the political willpower, we could have squashed the terrorists on Taiwan."

Powell was merely making an official statement on behalf of the Bush administration. Don't kill the messenger.

I believe this has been US policy since carter.
But we continue to defend Taiwan against the Chinese, so they can't complain too much.

Both Taiwan and China pursued the 'One China' policy. The U.S. agreed to it with the understanding that force would not be used and that the U.S. would sell arms to Taiwan to help them defend themselves from a possible attack. Taiwan has broken that agreement by declaring their desire for independence. The U.S. can probably now stop selling arms to Taiwan.
Regarding China being Communist, it should be noted that China is the fastest developing free-market capitalist society. Chinese Communism is changing drastically.

Colin Powell needs to be fired ASAP, before he does any more damage. What is he trying to do, get Kerry elected? These kinds of remarks are just the right kind of thing to drive ultra-right-wing Bush voters into the Constitution Party camp.

You know, Colin, this is not right for you to say! Even if that is what W would say. Sometimes even W can be wrong!
What was that about freedom??? This burns me up.
Shame on you all!

The whole reason for the Shanghai Communique was to keep Beijing in line, with a vague "one China" joint statement, without specifying which was the real one. Powell (if this quote is correct) has just managed to reshape decades of policy dating back to the Nixon administration. I wonder how the founding fathers would rate an American govenment that supports communist slavery and promotes the death of freedom? I'm sure they wouldn't care. It is not our job to bring freedom to anyone. When we've tried in the past, countries have either outright resisted us (veitnam) or have eventually turned on us (South Korea: 38,000 dead Americans to free them. Now they are violently anti-American).
Taiwan would just turn on us as South Korean and Europe have turned on us. Better not to give the Taiwanese the chance to do the same. I'm more concerned with the state of America than that of foreigners.
