CA: ANALYSIS - Governor shows loyalty, but picks his spots

SACRAMENTO - With his historic election in last year's recall, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger infused California's languishing Republican Party with a new, muscle-bound vigor. Many party stalwarts dreamed of a resurgent GOP -- aided by members of ``Arnold's Army'' gaining a stronger foothold in Golden State politics.

But the dream hasn't proven quite so vivid, in part because Schwarzenegger has selectively picked which issues and candidates to campaign for.

The governor has largely pleased his Republican base with an anticipated campaign trip to Ohio for the president, GOP endorsements and prodigious fundraising. But he has also bolstered his maverick reputation -- breaking ranks with his party to back a popular initiative that would fund embryonic stem-cell research and endorsing an open primary proposition touted as a way to usher more politicians like himself into office.

So far, Schwarzenegger has limited his campaign appearances for GOP legislative candidates to a few real contenders, such as Monday's event for Silicon Valley Assembly hopeful Steve Poizner.

The governor can ``have his cake and eat it, too,'' by pleasing and flouting his party at will, said Mark Petracca, a political scientist at the University of California-Irvine. ``Republicans need him a lot more than he needs them. That gives him a lot of liberty.''

Schwarzenegger has made no secret of his independent streak. He's a party loyalist on most fiscal issues. But he's also his own man, a Californian who is pro-environment and pro-choice, even when his party isn't.

And, there are practical reasons for the moderate governor to avoid sticking his neck out too far for his party. For one, Republican President Bush is unpopular in California and Democrats are expected to turn out in droves to eject him. --snip--

If I were Arnold I would realize he will not be reelected as governor. The CRATS will have time to set up another candidate and push his popularity. The CRATS dropped the ball the last election because they did not have time to lie in another CRAT. So the best he can do is join the President Bush campaign and visit other states for the last few days of this presidential election..

Ahnold was in a unique position to help W carry California this year. Instead, he sat on his hands.

My first post to this site, I was called a troll because I argued that McClintock was the real republican, and that we would sacrifice our cultural values to elect a pretender. (admittedly, it was my first post, a vanity, and I posted the day I signed up, but had lurked a long time previous...I was young and stupid)

Anyway, Arnold's true colors are now beginning to show.

Arnold is a girlie man. President Bush doesn't need him. I see Rudy's with Bush lately. Arnold's caught up in himself. Reagan wouldn't be too impressed.

Well... Flomar didn't say which party. ;-)

Arnold's borrowing and spending have consistently been opposed by the majority of State Senators. He has overwhelming support from the Dems, however. After the election, I sure hope the Republicans start screaming about this impostor. Arnold has taken his "liberty" way too far, aided and abetted by his loyal herd sheep.
