Executive producer Jeff Fager hoped to break the story during a high-impact election eve broadcast of 60 MINS on October 31

That's a heavy, heavy charge. Hope Drudge has something to back that up. If he does, the Pajama People have got to ride on Viacom again, and this time, we will not be turned back!

Next comes the question of who was selling it.

I am hearing through the grapevine that the 101ST has a sit-rep regarding al-Qaqaa in April of 2003. Methinks this would be embarrassing to the NYT and Kerry campaign if they had an ounce of shame.

Note that Viacom is or has peddled their shares of Blockbuster recently. Maybe Blockbuster is a good target.

If this is true, appalling does not do it justice.

Journalism is about releasing information to the public when you can do so, not about holding until it can do the most damage to a candidate.

That is bias, clear as day.

Words fail me here.

I think we're missing something even bigger about the timing on this. This story was the big, last minute, October surprise that was to be coordinated between 60 Minutes, the New York Times and probably the Washington Post and Boston Globe, all hitting Sunday Night through Monday morning, just in time for Election Day.

Just like in 2000 there would be enough time to hurt Bush but not enough time for Team Bush to strike back. But the New York Times broke the story a full week early. Why?

Notice that the sKerry campaign had their talking points ready and pushed this story to the top of the news cycle yesterday. This story broke when it did because the Demwits had to do something to keep the "Kerry Lied About Meeting with the Security Council" story from getting legs. The UN story is big and they realized that unless they capture the new cycle with a big story of their own the talk this week would all be about Kerry being more of a compulsive liar than Gore (hard to believe, but true).

They're going to try to milk this for all it's worth, but the effect is going to be much more muted than expected. That's OK with them, however, since it effectively shut out the Kerry/UN/Lie story from the news cycle entirely.

Don't need to back it up with facts, the damage is done to CBS and NYSlimes.
