Cutting through Gaza City, near the beach, is a road called Market Street. It is lively, and run down.
From a mosque loudspeaker, readings from the Koran hang in the air. Car horns blare, and horses snort and stamp as they wait for their carts to be loaded. It is typical Gaza.
Woman in Gaza walks past graffiti for the Qassam Brigades Gazans welcome Israel's withdrawal, but are waiting to see it happen And all along Market Street, people say they do not believe the Israelis will really leave.
However, the Knesset votes on Monday on Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's disengagement plan.
"The Israelis don't do what they say," said an elderly man, called Tahir, as he sat outside his shoe shop listening to a radio.
"If they want to withdraw, they're welcome. But we know the Israelis. We know they don't stick to their word."
He had summed up the mood on Market Street.
Those who live and work along it are mainly from families who lost homes in what is now Israel during the war of 1948. And in Gaza they have lived through nearly 40 years of Israeli occupation.
They find it hard to believe that Israel may really be about to step back...
Back on Market Street, outside the butchers, Abu Abed worried about what that Israeli control would mean economically. He said people from Gaza needed to be allowed to cross into Israel to work....

Prayers for your son and family.
But he did vote for the withdrawal...
Toda la el! (Thanks the Lord)
We should never have stayed in Gaza... And the settlements there were a mistake...
I doubt that he voted for the withdrawal.
He did... So did Limor Livnat...

What a handsome man . You must be very proud !
Will be praying for his protection .
Wow! Thanks for the information!
The truth of the matter is that except for some very far right activists, no Israeli wanted to stay in Gaza...
And what really enrages me is that the ones today protesting the most against the pullout are the very religious, who avoid serving in the Israeli army because, they say, they are engaged in studying the Torah!!! They also don't work and get welfare from the state!!!
This does enrage the secular Israelis too: they serve, they are in danger, they pay taxes and the religious consider them as of no import!!!..
That is why Lapid got so many support at the last election,
Lies, lies lies. Those who support the settlements serve in the military, in a very distinguished fashion. The haredim you are talking about who detest the state of Israel don't care about Gaza or Hebron either. They only care about their own little enclaves. You never see them turn out for protests unless it has something to do with funding for yeshivos or something. Apples and oranges.
False... But then I see a lot of people are trying to palm off their dreams as reality... You among others...
WHAT did I say that is false? My contention is that supporters of Gaza DO serve in the military. The ones who refuse to serve don't CARE about Gaza. Prove me wrong. You are the one who is throwing out generalizations, slurs and falsehoods all over the place.
