A Queens boy run over by an alleged drunken driver died of his injuries yesterday, as his heartbroken family branded the man behind the wheel a "murderer."
Loved ones of Vasean Phillip Alleyne are outraged that under current state law, alleged killer motorist John Wirta can't be charged with homicide or get more than a year in prison.

I think it would make a difference, but then again I'm not a lawyer. If this guy was sober, and the boy ran out in traffic and hit him he probably wouldn't be charged with anything.
I walked away from my mother when I was little and crossed Jamaica Avenue. She fainted when the guy in the liquor store called her. I'm sure she fainted because I made it across alive. Crossing Queens Blvd. is like crossing Sunrise Hwy or crossing the 405 in California.
I lived on 72nd rd from age 3 to 11.

Amen. It's pretty sad. My mother still warns me about crossing Sunrise Highway *LOL* and I'm not eleven that's for sure!
One of the biggest flamings I've received here at FR was for a thread I posted about 5 girls, all between the ages of 14-16 were killed when they were allowed by one of their fathers to all 5 crowd on a 4 wheeler/ATV, and ride it on a public street. They had a collision with a car and all 5 died.
I took the father to task, and was flamed merclessly.
Well, one of the biggest fights with my now 16 year old daughter I've had was last year. She wanted to go joyriding with her friend who had just gotten her driver's license that day.
It was Friday night, it was raining. I said no.
That night, the friend my daughter wanted to go joyriding with lost control on a slick road and hit a tree, killing herself and another young girl. Had I not took my stand, my daughter would've been in that car.
Sometimes, parents must take responsibility for what happens to their children.
I never went to AA, I forced myself to quit and set myself up for ridicule if I failed. I told my friends that I was done drinking, they didn't believe me and I set out to prove them wrong. I even carried a can of beer around with me for several months because I needed to get used to being around it without drinking. I didn't want to give up my friends along with alcohol.
It's been several years now.
I happen to agree that parents must take responsibility, esp. in light of your story. Imagine if you didn't! However, if he wasn't drunk, he may not have hit the boy to begin with.
At 7 or 8 years old, i got hit by a car while walking coming home from PS 165 crossing 73rd & 150st.
But I bounced real good. :-)
So they pulled all the "YIELD" signs and replaced with STOP signs = = = 3 Years later!
Excellent! I'll bet you feel great. Getting off an addiction is tought because you think that not drinking,etc. will leave one unfulfilled, at least that was my experience. I didn't have a drinking or a drug issue, but all addiction experience is pretty much the same. Sometimes peer pressure with friends who really know you is more effective!

In Missouri He would be facing manslaughter charges with a minmum of 7years in prison and as much as 15yrs.
Perhaps you should've just considered giving up driving.

Well here in New York, the DA has his priorities. That's what possession of one's own stash of drugs or illegal firearms gets, even if you never sold anything to anyone.

Beer was one thing, but when I finally got on my own, I had to try out scotch, vodka and it would seem no one else was in any or much danger, but after imbibing some of these harder drinks, vodka namely, I knew I went the wrong way down a street once, night time and I did not know the roads and it made me believe that if I ever drank hardy amounts, I'd do it at home. Just my $.02.
I no longer drive because the state of NH would not renew my driver's license when I moved back to Japan because we no longer had a residence there and had no relatives residing there ! But some states want to give illegal aliens licenses ! Hey - I'm American !
The " I quit driving " message was a joke , actually ...Drinking is more important than driving to me here in Japan ! Hehehe...My wife is my chauffeur !
My sister has a little videotape of a student riding her bicycle while under the influence of copious amounts of alcohol.
