Huge Cache of Explosives Vanished From Site in Iraq By JAMES GLANZ, WILLIAM J. BROAD and DAVID E. SANGER

Published: October 25, 2004

This article was reported and written by James Glanz, William J. Broad and David E. Sanger.

BAGHDAD, Iraq, Oct. 24 - The Iraqi interim government has warned the United States and international nuclear inspectors that nearly 380 tons of powerful conventional explosives - used to demolish buildings, produce missile warheads and detonate nuclear weapons - are missing from one of Iraq's most sensitive former military installations.

The huge facility, called Al Qaqaa, was supposed to be under American military control but is now a no man's land, still picked over by looters as recently as Sunday. United Nations weapons inspectors had monitored the explosives for many years, but White House and Pentagon officials acknowledge that the explosives vanished sometime after the American-led invasion last year.

The White House said President Bush's national security adviser, Condoleezza Rice, was informed within the past month that the explosives were missing. It is unclear whether President Bush was informed. American officials have never publicly announced the disappearance, but beginning last week they answered questions about it posed by The New York Times and the CBS News program "60 Minutes......"

I agree. I read the story and don't feel it will hurt a bit. In fact, it scared and concerned me about who has this material. If it scared me, it will scare others and if so, it will help Bush. The only thing I can think of because it is so, well, not Bush-bashing enough, it may be a preluded to a worse story later in the week. Maybe they find the material on Bush's ranch?

Two points are made

1) not enough troops or planning were provided for nation building 2) the Administration attempted to hide the loss from the IAEA - apparently for political reasons

The first point is just beating a dead horse. The second...?

Nothing. Not now, anyway.

IAEA=UN=Oil for Food.

I wouldn't tell the IAEA my favorite flavor of ice cream.

No it wasn't! The article Clearly states that IAEA abandoned the site BEFORE the invasion and clearly admits in the very beginning days of the war the marines went through the site and NOTHING was there. Any moron (yes even a DU'er) will know that Saddam moved the material during the WEEKS that the IAEA abandoned the site until the U.S. Marines arrived.

"The best they can say is that it was there BEFORE we invaded and it isn't there now. "

Exactly. Are we then to assume that Iraq actually had WMD since it was also known to have those under lock the last time inspectors were kicked out? The media spin on things now borders journalistic corruption.

I have become convinced newbie johannes is an agent provocateur whose roll here is to spread fear and uncertainty and otherwise make FR look bad.

VERY Bad... To the point where, if it is true, would piss me off too

Did you actually read the NT Times article? Can you point me to the part where it says that the weapons were confirmed to be there at any point after the invasion and then went missing? I'm betting this was what Saddam was shipping to Syria prior to the war.

Honestly, I'll say it again. I think I might be sick. And it's for the reason you state. I would not bet against Kerry trying to negotiate with Zarqawi behind our back. I really think he would do anything to become President. He did it before with the VC, why wouldn't he do it now?

The newbie post really struck me as weird and I thought for sure the poster was a troll. Why out of the blue would someone say that hundreds of soldiers could die this week when we've only lost 1000 in 18 months?

I may be overanalyzing the post but in conjunction with your point...

There not that stupid.. and if there were a cover-up, Rove would have leaked it back in the summer when it could have been forgotten.

In the game of hardcore politics, you don't sit around and hope something doesn't pop-up.

This is a snoozer..

But, of course, there will be bad attacks this week. It's still Rhamadon -- it's become a tradition.

There is no way that we know if this was moved before or after the invasion. The IAEA certified it was there on what date? That might be the key.

The "negative" in this story will not be that "we" let it get away, it might have already been gone, the "coverup" will be the big charge. Who knew, and when did they know it and all that crap.

Umm - this makes me want Bush to be re-elected even more, considering Kerry is a flip flop on this issue.

Kerry and the NY Times told us there were no weapons worthy of speaking in Iraq so how can it be?

The NYtimes thinks everything is a cover up. Too bad they are projecting onto the Bush team. It would be amazing if they actually stopped covering up for Kerry starting with the swift vet allegations.

VERY Bad... To the point where, if it is true, would piss me off too. It's not the fact the cache was raided, it's if there was a coverup. If there was a coverup, there will be big problems.

That's a lot of jumping to hypothetical conlusions. Just what the New York Times wants you to do.

BTW, in war, many things are not fully discovered in a timely way.

BTW2, we already know the insurgents in Iraq have a lot of explosives, because they use them.
