Chinese-American [Liberal] faces Iranian-born Republican
The Hill ^ | 10/24/04 | Patrick O'Connor

Rep. David Wu (D-Ore.), who says he is the first and only Chinese-American to serve in the House, has raised funds from Chinese-Americans across the country. Now, his Iranian-born Republican challenger is using a similar tactic in her own fundraising.

Goli Ameri, a telecommunications consultant, has used her connections within the Iranian-American community to raise money for her campaign to unseat the third-term Democrat.

Ameri has raised over $550,000 from Iranian-Americans, according to her campaign.

Early in the campaign, Tim Phillips, one of Ameri’s opponents in the May 19 primary, suggested that because of her Iranian descent, she would not be that hard on terrorism. Her campaign quickly seized on the remarks to highlight her support for the Iraq war.

In fact, an Ameri campaign ad featured images from Iran’s 1979 revolution, in which religious imams took control of the government, to emphasize her strong ties to the Middle East and understanding of the region’s politics.

“I think we did a good job of making it an issue,” Ameri’s campaign spokesman, Hap Hinman, said. “Goli gives a personal voice to (the war) as someone who grew up in the region.”

At this stage, one month past the primary, Hinman said the campaign has a number of commitments from PACs, both within and outside of the Iranian community, but will not list those contributions until the June 30 Federal Election Commission (FEC) filing deadline.

Although Republicans have targeted this race and are very confident about their chances to replace Wu in the Portland-based 1st District, many of the congressman’s Democratic colleagues are confident he will retain his seat.

They object to rumors floating around Washington that he does not have the party’s full support.

“He is a tireless campaigner,” said Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D-Ore.). “I see him at events that aren’t even in his district. He’s covered the 1st Congressional District like a blanket.”

Wu came under fire from other Democrats when he was one of 15 party members to vote in favor of last November’s Medicare bill. He told The Hill on Monday that his vote has not yielded political fruit.

Ameri won 50 percent of the primary vote to garner her party’s nomination, defeating two opponents.

She is a fiscal conservative who supports abortion rights and was a vocal opponent of Oregon’s recently defeated statewide tax increase.

At this stage, Wu has a distinct fundraising advantage. Ameri had raised almost $935,000 as of the last FEC filing at the end of March but had spent almost $730,000. Wu still had almost $1.3 million in cash on hand.

Wu won each of his previous elections by more than 20 percentage points, but Democrats have only a slight registration advantage in the district, where 22 percent of registered voters are independent.

Funny that this article fails to mention the recent skelaton that was let out of Wu's closet...the fact that he sexually molested and beat up a college girl friend a couple months after they broke up, back in their college days. He put a pillow over her face to muffle her screams while he violated her. And Oregonians seem to be willing to overlook it, despite a big write up in the Oregonian...at least that is my take on it here.
