In Our Opinion

We need a leader who recognizes the threat and does not shy away from it. Bush's steadfast leadership makes him the best choice for president.

PUBLISHED: October 24, 2004

We are at war.
It is a sad fact, but a challenge that we must face up to since we were attacked Sept. 11, 2001.

During this period in our nation's history we need a leader who recognizes the threat and does not shy from it. That leader is George Bush.

During this global challenge we cannot afford a leader with a finger-to-the-wind attitude such as Sen. John Kerry. When our country is attacked, we do not need to pass a global smell test to protect ourselves, as Kerry believes we must.

Even those Americans with the most to lose in Iraq strongly support our efforts there. A recent University of Pennsylvania's National Annenberg Election Survey interviewed 655 adults who served active military duty between February and October, or family members of military personnel. Sixty-seven percent of respondents approved of the way President Bush is doing his job, and 64 percent said the war in Iraq is worth fighting. About 75 percent said the United States should keep troops in Iraq until the country establishes a stable government.

These numbers come from the very Americans bearing the burden. They understand what's at stake for the United States and the world, and they are willing to continue their commitment.

Kerry insists that if he is elected he will convene a summit of European leaders to secure their aid in Iraq. That is no guarantee, particularly since those countries refused to join the coalition already in Iraq.

Bush gets Macomb Daily and Oakland Press behind them.

Detroit News backs neither.

Free Press, Muskegon Chronicle, Battle Creek Enquirer(Gannett), and Daily Press and Argus(owned by former Democrat official) backs Kerry.

How much difference does this make in Macomb?

Unfortunatly, I'm not sure.

I know the joke where I'm from is that the endorsement by the Press and Argus is the "Kiss of Death" of a campaign.

If there was a swing county in MI that could toss the state electorate in a Bush direction, this is it. Good news - let's hope the "Reagan democrats" show up again. Better yet, maybe they've grown up and are now republicans.
