Fighters Escort Two Small Planes Away From Bush Rally
POSTED: 3:48 pm EDT October 23, 2004 UPDATED: 5:31 pm EDT October 23, 2004
MELBOURNE, Fla. -- Federal authorities said Saturday two small private planes violated restricted air space over a campaign rally by President George W. Bush at a Melbourne baseball stadium.
Fighter jets escorted the plane to Merritt Island Airport near Cocoa Beach, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. The Secret Service has interviewed the pilot. FAA spokesman Greg Martin said further action is possible.
Reporters covering Bush's campaign event said the military jets drowned out Bush's words at Space Coast Stadium.
Earlier at a Lakeland event, a plane was escorted to an airport in nearby Winter Haven after it violated the president's airspace.
The activity in the sky repeatedly distracted the crowd from Bush's speechs.

Naturally the pilots are supposed to check for any warnings.
And this "piddly little thing" could have sprayed smallpox or anthrax all over the stadium.
Time for heads up folks. Two weeks to go and World Series on the east coast. Hope the security is high.
"AFTERALL, THE SENATOR SAID SO!"
I LOVE this!!! My new motto
I think the President is in the HANDS of GOD
I see this entire period in my life as a fight between the forces of evil and the forces of Good.
I have in the WH the man I want to remain in the WH
The medicine will continue to get even more bitter thoughout his administration.
He will never back down, I can see the determination in his tears.
LOL! Nicely done. I actually understand most of that, and I'm not a pilot.
AFL-CIO Para-thugs.
The Pilot in Command (POC) is responsible for everything regarding the operation of his aircraft. From not violating restricted airspace to having the proper equipment and fuel requirements. The only thing he is not responsible for is picking up the lunch tab.
agreed
Unless you're in an "experimental" aircraft. Then they can even nab you if your passenger buys you that $100 burger.
That $100 hamburger is about $300 now.
There is a list of restrictions and updates like signal towers out in the area that a pilot is supposed to check before every flight. Often, people just gloss over it real quick, but if the president is in the area, the pilot should know it. In fact, I was flying one day when an area was placed under temporary restriction because the president was speaking, and everybody sure knew about it.
Most likely, the guy will be stripped of his certificate and won't fly for many years if ever.
Damn - where are you? It still runs around $100 out here.
Los Angeles. Talk about complicated airspace. I like flying a Socata TB-20. Yes I know it's French.
You mean attendees at the rally weren't issued complimentary CBW hazmat suits?
How inconsiderate.
Would it be practical to incorporate some sort of coded messaging in a broadcast radio (be it FM, weather band, or whatever) that would allow a suitable receiver to indicate whether there were any NOTAMs of interest within some distance of any given airport? I would imagine that for pilots who do almost all of their flying within a very small area it would get very boring to read NOTAMs day after day to find there was nothing worth noting.
Figures this happens in my backyard and I had to work today. Patrick Air Force Base is just about due west of Melbourne (across the river) so I am assuming that the fighters came from there. I watched two fighters intercept a private plane after Sept. 11th flying down over I-95. It was incredible to see their speed and agility and hear the noise ans see the contrails off of their wings.
Nah, Bush supporters are the types of people who dig military aircraft. If I'd been there I'd have LOVED seeing the jets and seeing the prez on the same day.
This is a reasonable and plausible response. We are all going a little overboard with conspiracy theories and accusations. Some things are true eg. campaign headquarter violence, voter intimidation et al, but intimating that the DemoRATS would go to this level is a little over the top IMHO. Don't get me wrong, I will not put anything pass the DemoRATS, but unless it is a factual report, it is best we shy away from the rumor mills.
> Would it be practical to ...
I'm no longer an active pilot, so I'm not up to date on
trends.
I expect that in the not too distant future, the Jepp
charts will be real-time moving maps showing the
latest info. The next step is heads-up holographic
imagery of the flight environment.
In post-9/11, don't count on it especially with the CIC so near!!!
