Illinois: New Poll in State Supreme Court Race; National GOP pitches in to help Crane [+Keyes info]

A recently released poll in the hypercompetitive and hard-fought State Supreme Court race in southern Illinois, Republican Lloyd Karmeier is clinging to a slight lead 43-40 over Democrat Gordon Maag. 17% of the respondents indicated they were undecided in the poll that was conducted October 17-18 by Virginia-based Public Opinion Strategies (POS). The polls margin of error was +/- 4.9%

The numbers in the State Supreme Court race track closely with the Presidential race where, in the fifth district, President George W. Bush leads Senator John Kerry by a 45-42 margin.

By contrast, Republican U.S. Senate candidate Alan Keyes is lagging behind his GOP ticket mates. Democrat U.S. Senate candidate Barack Obama leads Keyes 52-27 in the fifth district, according to the poll.

After a lively, spirited debate between Democrat Barack Obama and Republican Alan Keyes last night in their first televised debate, there is added anticipation for their final debate Tuesday night, October 26.

The debate will be broadcast live on WTTW-Channel 11, the PBS station in Chicago, from 7:00-8:00pm. It is sponsored by Channel 11 and the City Club of Chicago.

Well, the good news for Keyes is he's no longer down by 40 or 50 points. He's now down by 25 and looks like most of the holdouts are probably Republicans. If the Republicans would come to their senses in Illinois, they might be able to defeat Obama.

Unfortunately, if Keyes is behind by 25 points in the "fifth district" to which they refer, he must be down a lot more than that statewide, since Bush is up 45-42 in the "fifth district" and Bush is down by over 10% statewide. I assume that it refers to a state legislative district, since the 5th Congressional District is Rahm Emanuel's district within the city of Chicago and there is no way that Bush is anywhere near 45% in the 5th CD.

The collar counties are trending RAT. They are turning into a Montgomery County of PA. I see lots of Kerry/ Edwards signs, but few Bush/Cheney signs in Du Page County. The sad thing is that the local RINOS are interested in fighting back the RAT trend in IL. The RINOS only care about how much pork in coming into their safe districts. This is why tomorrow, I am going to Racine, WI to paint the Badger state red. Kerry can have IL, but I won't let my northern neighbor fall to Kerrorists.

Good for you. We need to make sure Wisconsin Republicans don't get lackadaisical just because Bush has been up in most recent polls in the state. And I'm still hopeful that Tim Michels can take down Russ Feingold in the Senate race.

It is quite telling that Bush would be leading in the Illinois 5th District (Appellate Court). The majority of voters in this southern most district are democrats, rural area, few towns in excess of 15,000 people. The unemployment here is much higher than in the rest of the state. (Too bad we are connected via the Electoral College with Chicago.)

If this democrat area is voting Bush, I think it portends good success in other democrat areas of the country.

5th District in the Supreme Court race refers to the Appellate Court District. There are 5 Appellate Court Districts in Illinois, with the 5th being the southern most.

They won't. I expect the WI polls to fluctuate just like the OH polls in the very near future. Today Kerry was at the University of WI / Milwaukee. Kerry intends to buy more ads in WI. Next week Bush will be in WI as well. The Badger State is headed for a bumpy ride for the next 2 weeks.

Pretty big margin of error. Not sure when they did the sampling either.

I'm a newbie to Free Republic, but I've been a lurker for sometime now. I've donated to every Keyes campaign since his first run for president. Unfiltered Keyes is as impressive as anything you'll ever see in the political world. He may not win this, but his message and delivery of it are worth supporting.

Go Keyes...

You'll never know. There's a reason why the debates were scheduled so late in the election season.
