Bush backs temporary work ID for immigrants

OK for jobs unfilled by Americans, he tells Hispanic audience

The Associated Press

Updated: 3:31 p.m. ET Oct. 22, 2004

WASHINGTON - President Bush, saying the United States should find a more humane way to treat immigrants, told a Spanish-language television network Thursday that he supports offering temporary cards to immigrants who want jobs that go unfilled by U.S. citizens.

Bush said the card would provide legal status for undocumented immigrants or those who want to come to the United States to work. But he said he would not offer amnesty.

"I recognize that people are coming here to work," Bush told Univision. "And while they're doing jobs that aren't filled by Americans, I think there should be a temporary worker program and a card that helps the workers and employers who want them."

The president had made immigration reform a priority, but put it on the back burner after the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks. He championed immigration reform again in a White House speech in January, but election politics have prevented any legislative action.

BTW, you probably haven't read President Bush's speeches where the problem will be solved by raising the Mexican middle class class and eliminating the corruption of the Mexican govt.

Does he mean to tell us that Mexicans working here and sending money back to Mexico will do all that?

In case you haven't noticed, we don' get to vote in Mexico, unlike the illegals do here.

Not true. I signed up in 98 and I supported President Bush 100 percent the first time he ran.

Since then he has been wrong on almost everything IMO so I will not support him this time.

Maybe the Republicans will start giving a **** about Americans(not just corporations eager to move jobs overseas) again someday and I will support them again.

Bush is just barely the lesser of two evils.

Uh no dimwit(I want to use the synomym for sphicter, but I won't).

Bush was talking about getting the corruption out of the Mexican system.

Lets see, you support amnesty for illegal aliens as long as W proposes it and I am against it no matter who proposes it.

Who's the leftist, Kerry-O??

LOL!

So, what's the difference between a blanket amnesty and a defacto amnesty? Bush is selling us out and has been for years. There is no rational defense for his actions regarding the illegal invasion of America. I'm sorry to say that because I voted for him. This time I'm voting for the Constitution Party.

Oh, yeah. I glanced at that when it was posted. It appeared insipid, so I moved on after a paragraph or so.

Yeah, the immigration situation needs to be improved, but electing Kerry sure isn't the way to get it done. President Bush's plan for these temporary permits doesn't seem all that bad to me. At some point, we will have to deport some people, though.

And, IMO, this issue can wait a couple of weeks. Getting President Bush reelected is the first order of business, for a whole bunch of reasons.

I like your screen name. It calls to mind, "Anyway, bearing all that in mind, will you fly the plane to Luton...please?"

Go right ahead, no one is stopping you.

It's not like I'm like the democrats who are trying to stop Nader. (i.e I'm not afraid of your empty threats)

Dammit, George! Can you just SHUT UP about this before the election!?

How smart was it to bring up reclassifying peoples overtime pay status? This is something that could have waited. There was zero possibility that this issue would bring one vote to the president, but certainly could energize some opposition.

Naw, I just think the last ditch efforts by those trying to split the conservative vote is humorous.

No problem about the date but I come by my cynicism honestly.

I had no idea President Bush would push for amnesty for illegal aliens, or give tax breaks to US companies that move jobs overseas and say its a good thing, or massively increase the national debt...

I could go on but you get the picture.

Funny, I don't recall him advocating these stands when he ran the first time.

How come some have to have a job before they are given a visa and others sneak over the border, receive drivers
licenses, SSI, foodstamps and who knows what else?

Drivers licenses mean voting rights, guys. Any wonder why there are more registered to vote than live in an area?

Unless it is legal immigration, the walking man can just turn right around and walk back home.

If you think blacks will do the work the Mexican illegals do you should come to Florida and get educated. The blacks will not take these jobs because the governmnet pays them more in relief to do nothing. The Mexicans are happy and willing to work hard to make a living for their families they don't have the attitude that they are owed a living.
