THE "WOLF" AD [10/22 10:58 AM]
The Note, which rebounds from yesterday's poor judgment with a funny summary of all the campaign coverage cliches this year, offers a hint of the "Wolf" ad that Rich mentioned in the Corner yesterday:
As for the new Bush ad, the AP says the spot is, "reminiscent of Ronald Reagan's 'Bear' ad that was credited with framing the 1984 race, (and) shows a dense forest from above. Scurrying is heard as the camera plunges deeper into the woods and pans sunlight-speckled trees. Shadows move through the brush before animals are seen amid the forest. Then, the ad reveals the type of animal: a pack of wolves rest on a hill. As the commercial closes, the cunning and ruthless predators stir, crawling toward the camera." One Bush adviser tells ABC News, "The ad was produced and tested months ago. Voter reaction was so powerful that we decided to hold the ad to the end of the campaign and make it ONE of the closing spots. It will run to the end."
The campaign says the ad will start to air today on national cable and in local markets in battleground states. The AP is reporting the ad will run in 14 states and that with the RNC, the campaign is spending about $15 million total on TV ads this week.
Turbans on the wolves?
Yeah I saw this ad on Fox...reminded me of the video for Pink Floyd's song "Dog's of War".
Love it!
Holy Cow! Now that's an ad!
I like the overall point of the ad, but I don't find wolves scary
It would have been more powerful if they had done something like have an overhead helicopter shot of wolves running in a pack through the woods.
But overall, it's a good closing ad.
Go back to Grim's fairy tales and you will see the wolf image used all the time. The "wolf" is a deep down emotionally linked image of a predator, violent and sexual at the same time. For those who do not live in the country and have some association with wild nature, it will give them a pulse of fear and excitement. That visceral reaction, and associating that reaction with how people felt on 9/11, will make this a fairly effective campaign commercial.
Wolves are cool.
Can anyone tell us what is said? I live in the dark ages, and have no sound on my computer. When you just see the visuals it's not that impressive.
Thanks
I would have preferred jackals instead of wolves - more appropriate imagery, and I like wolves. They mate for life. Or something.
That said, I bet they would have had trouble finding stock footage of jackals. So maybe it's for the best.
I wonder if the animal theme could take off into other campaign ads:
----
Image: Dolphin (dolphin chatter)
VO: Dolphins travel all over the earth, and they are the smartest creatures on the oceans.
Image: Kerry windsurfing, dolphins playing in the background
VO: Like the international left elite see themselves. Dolphins seem harmless...
Image: More Dolphins start to show up. (more chatter, louder)
VO: but when they get together, like on the international criminal court...
Image: Kerry-stand-in gets knocked off his board by a dolphin.
VO: they can turn on you at a moment's notice, and who knows who's behind it?
Image: Shamoo comes up for air, blood in the water next to a winsurfing board. A bloody leg floats by.
VO: Even a dolphin can kick John Kerry's Ass.
GWB: I'm George W. Bush, and I approve of this message.
-----
Image: Cockroaches crawling around on a kitchen floor
VO: Sometimes, the best defense (stomp)
Image: A boot comes crunching down on some cockroaches
VO: is a good offense. That's why I (stomp)
Image: ditto
VO: support tort reform.
GWB: I'm George W. Bush, and that is my boot in this message.

That's a good start. They can come to Central New Jersey kill as many as they want, as far as I'm concerned. They've become vermin around here.
You might if you were surrounded by a pack of 'em.
That, in a nutshell, is why you spend more time here rather than at, say, Salon.com.
All you have to do is HEAR them out there and it'll make you more than a bit nervous.
