When I walk into a school and tell them that my daughter had appointments or that I need to remove her from school an hour early...I dont expect to be told that I have to write a note asking permission or telling them additonal details

This is my beef. I need to give them a note with an "approved" reason for an absence? Screw that.

Sad thing is now my son knows that I lied.

This was always the thing that burned me when my kids were in public school. The system forced parents to lie. A parent's word should be enough to take their own kid out of school when they feel it's necessary. It should be nobody's business why. Sometimes things come up that are not "excused" absences that are more important than school. Taking your child to see the President would not be an excused absence but worth more educationally than a day at school.

My daughter-in-law is a teacher with a masters. She has not mentioned NCLB to me. She seems very happy with her job. She started as a kindergarden teacher, then moved up to first grade. After two years of that she asked to be moved back to K. It was because of discipline problems. She said that the K kids are easier to handle. By first grade they are already out of control. Parents don't discipline at all and defy the school to discipline.

I refused to do it, just like I refused to descrive our races on the census.
