October 8, 2004 Deaf and Hard of Hearing Americans Endorse Kerry-Edwards Ticket

Kerry Edwards Campaign Announces Deaf and Hard of Hearing Americans National Steering Committee For Immediate Release

The Kerry-Edwards campaign today announced its National Deaf and Hard of Hearing Americans for Kerry-Edwards Steering Committee. The Steering Committee includes national leaders, political activists, social service providers, heads of national organizations, and educational specialists.

Co-chairman Gregory Hlibok, a leader in the Deaf President Now movement, said “the strength of this National Steering Committee speaks to the confidence and commitment of America’s 27 million Americans with hearing loss have in John Kerry to ensure that every American has the opportunity to fully participate in society.”

Hlibok is joined on the committee by co-chairperson Judy Stout. Stout is a life-long political activist, and teaches political leadership at Gallaudet University.

“John Kerry has a proven record of providing opportunities to Americans with disabilities. His senate record on the Americans with Disabilities Act , Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, MiCASSA, the Telecommunications Act, and on accessible transportation and voting demonstrate that he understands the issues of the disability community,” said Stout.

John Kerry has detailed a plan for an America that ensures freedom, independence, and choices for people with disabilities. It includes ideas on issues ranging from health care, community living and employment, civil rights enforcement and education, to transportation, technology, and housing, and continues the fight for fairness and equality.

These committed individuals will join the 50 Kerry-Edwards Deaf and Hard of Hearing state coordinators in organizing the 27 million Americans with hearing loss nationwide to elect the Kerry-Edwards ticket.

You know. This is quite ludicrous. I, being one of the 28 million people who have hearing losses (mild to profound) am quite offended to see that this group "Deaf and Hard of Hearing Americans National Steering Committee" would put me, as a hard of hearing individual, into the picture as being one who support Kerry/Edwards. Not so! There are millions of deaf and hard of hearing Bush supporters out there and they are trying to stake that claim to all of 28 million people!!

Most recently is a website being developed, www.deafrepublicans.com , to make known the names of deaf or hard of hearing republicans who support Bush. Stop by and send an email of encouragement to the owner of that site as he is trying to get it complete. It's early but contact the owner and offer encouragements! Please!! This group should not get away with this.

I recognize and know many of these people listed. One, the most famous, is Greg Hlibok, leader of the "Deaf President Now" event that took place at the campus of Gallaudet University in Washington D.C. in March of 1988.

This is really an outrage on my part and for many of the deaf and hard of hearing people supporters of Bush.

This is just a culturally deaf minority group trying to stake a claim among the 28 million people with hearing lossses and that the Kerry/Edwards campaign is trying to take advantage of.

The picture is not 28 million peopel with hearing losses that support Kerry...not by a long shot!!

Help support the www.deafrepublicans.com website and a show of encouragement.

I'm sorry about your hearing loss.

But, you're luckier than the rest of us, who have to listen to these two goofballs! You're missing nothing.

Only the hard of hearing could endorse Kerry.
They haven't had the chance to hear him talk out of both sides of his mouth.

There are millions of deaf and hard of hearing Bush supporters out there...

My wife is one of them. Been a staunch Republican all her life.

I too am profoundly hard of hearing. I can assure you this is another false attempt by the traitor Kerrry to pander to us for our votes. I voted a week ago for our President Bush. Kerry has no standing in the Deaf community.

Actually for those of us who are hard of hearing it is even more painful to watch them talk out of both sides of their mouths. Remember we can read lips.

We are also more likely to get our news from reading than people with normal hearing and are not pigeon holed into listening to those big three network a**holes.

Apparently the Democrat party thinks by viture of someone being a victim of a disease/disability that this some how lends credence to their political views. Give me a break. Good Lord, they really do think Americans are stupid. No wonder the Europeans love Kerry.

One of my best friends is deaf; he's a lip reader. He's voting for Pres. Bush (he & his wife love the political cartoons that I send them daily).

The most famous deaf conservative is Rush Limbaugh, who wouldn't be able to hear without his implants.
