Flunking the FDR Test
New York Post ^ | October 21, 2004 | ERIC FETTMANN

...In Iraq, John Kerry — who used to say that Saddam Hussein posed a genuine threat to America because he surely possessed weapons of mass destruction — would have imposed a "global test" before committing forces to protect U.S. security... [H]e would not be prepared to act until nations like France and Germany gave the go-ahead.

Indeed, he stresses the infinite value of conversation — calling for "a summit of all our allies," much as he once begged the first President Bush to send someone to Baghdad in the firm belief that Saddam Hussein could be talked out of Kuwait.

How very Sixties — let's all sit around the campfire and sing a verse or two of "Puff, the Magic Dragon" and all those good vibes will solve the world's problems with a burst of peace and love.

Well, FDR had something to say about that, too.

At an Oval Office press conference on the morning after his Quarantine Speech, Roosevelt was asked if the next step was to convene "a conference of the peace-loving nations."

"No," said that president, "conferences are out of the window. You never get anywhere with a conference."

Just as George W. Bush said to John Kerry: "I've never seen a meeting that would depose a tyrant or bring a terrorist to justice."

...Kerry's approach mirrors that of U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan, who declared this week that France, Germany and Russia are "serious and important governments" that would never allow themselves to be bought off by Iraqi oil money.

Yet, that is precisely what happened — as the Duelfer Report made so devastatingly clear. Saddam's scheme to purchase European support for ending international sanctions was well on its way to success. Once that was achieved, he had every intention of resuming his dormant WMD programs....

some interesting points.

but the 'global test' thing has been echoed enough times now i think. its starting to play into their favor, since it's clear to anyone who actually watched the debates, that John Scarrey didn't mean he would wait for a go-ahead from other countries, but simply that when you invade another country, you'd better make damned sure the rest of the world understands why you're doing it.

when the police break into a house and seize drugs, they have to be able to explain later WHY they did it. so to claim that john kerry wants this 'global test' is starting to make the bush team look a little silly to a lot of people! "oh, the Bush administration would be against proving to the world that your war is justified??" that's not the kind of question we want people asking themselves!!!

they need to cut it out and get down to the details about how they will make this country even safer! i'm sick of both sides just echoing the same rhetoric over and over and over ad nausium.

things not to say anymore until after the election:
flip flopper
wrong war, wrong place, wrong time
global test
homosexual
concord conservative
halliburton
87 billion dollars

The man on sticks had stones.

The "Great Orange Hunter" has botox.

What the Hell happened to Democrats of vision?

The only one I can think of today is the Senator from Connecticut who was, of course, utterly rejected in the primaries.

Joe Lieberman is what's left of the FDR wing of the Democratic Party. And he's truly "An Army of one."

Just makes you weep.

FDR and JFK (the first one) would have been appauled by Sen. Kerry's ideas. Just ask a real Democrat, Zell Miller, not one of the new wave Communists Behind Soros (CBS) Democrats.

FDR, Truman, JFK and even LBJ (flawed as he was), would have had the guy who proposed legalizing abortion or sodomy or gay marriage committed to the looney bin.

They all understood the need to fight the Devil abroad (and none of them would have been shy about calling the enemy Evil either).

They had different economic views than modern conservatives, but they had the same morality.
Remember, Reagan was an FDR Democrat union leader. When he said "I didn't leave the Democratic Party, the Democratic Party left me" he wasn't being cute. He meant it.
When Nancy Reagan said that Ronald Reagan wouldn't approve of replacing FDR on the dime, she was reflecting her husband's sincere admiration to the man on sticks.

The modern Democratic Party is not the Party of FDR, Truman, JFK or even LBJ. Republicans should claim FDR, Truman and JFK as their own, since Republican policies in this day and age ARE the policies of FDR, Truman and JFK (especially now that the Republicans have come around on Medicare and provided the drug benefit).

And another "newbie" stops by to enlighten us all! (I've seen some of your other posts as well.)

Spare us.

I might buy that if someone could explain to me what the substantial difference is between a communist/socialist and a communitarian.

Aren't communitarians folks that live in communes? ;)

Actually, they seem to be the ones that want you to live in a commune, by defining the commune to include where you live.

Reagan too? He was a loyal FDR follower who never recanted.

Reagans loyalty to FDR probably had more to do with WW2 than with his policies, its not something I know much about, I only know that Reagan as President was pretty much the opposite of FDR.

However I will not recant that FDR was a closet commie. He gave his "Uncle Joe" eastern europe, dooming millions to death and opression for 5 decades. His administration was infested with marxists, as was Trumans, and we have both of them to thank for many of the worlds problems today.

FDR fought WW2 well, I'll give em that, but that doesn't change the fact FDR was a rotten commie loving SOB.
