LOS ANGELES, Oct. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- President George W. Bush was elected to a second term as President with 55% of the votes in Channel One News' OneVote 2004, one of the largest online teen elections in US history. Senator John Kerry received 40%, with 5% voting for a third party candidate. Although pundits believe that there are a number of "swing" states that could follow either candidate, Channel One's OneVote participants defied conventional wisdom by awarding President Bush the states of Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Oregon, West Virginia, Wisconsin, Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Nevada, New Hampshire and New Mexico. Senator Kerry's lone swing state victory came in Maine. OneVote 2004 was Channel One network's third mock presidential election, and is one of the largest online teen votes in history with nearly 1.4 million participants. Sponsored by Clearasil, Channel One News' OneVote 2004 was designed to encourage young people to participate in the electoral process from an early age. Ballots were cast on October 19th and 20th through Channel One News' Web site, http://www.channelone.com, and the final results have now been compiled and segmented by state; and will be announced on-air on Channel One News' October 21st broadcast.
"American teens have made their voices heard through Channel One News' OneVote program, and President Bush ended up the victor by a margin of 55% to 40%," said Jim Morris, Executive Producer, Channel One News. "It is crucial to get young people in this country involved in the political process from an early age, so we are also particularly proud that Channel One News' OneVote 2004 initiative set the mark as one of the largest online teen votes ever, with nearly 1.4 million ballots counted."
One of the interesting highlights of Channel One News' OneVote 2004 came from Michigan's teen voters, who originally had the candidates separated by 12 votes out of 80,000 in the final hour before eventually rallying to select President Bush over Senator Kerry.
Channel One News' OneVote program continues to address the negative voting trend that began decades ago, when 18-20 year olds were granted the right to vote by the 26th Amendment. Since that time, voting by young adults has declined significantly.
Channel One News is broadcast via satellite to nearly 12,000 secondary schools across the country; it is the highest-rated teen television program in United States.

was the Scholastic poll the "Weekly Reader" poll or has that one not come out yet?
Awesome! Great news.
You know, I'm not sure if its the same thing. I will check for you.
but, but, but...what about the cellphone voters????
This dispells the myth that the country is evenly divided.
This must really PO Ted Turner! Doesn't Channel One belong to him?
just wondered because "Nickilodian" poll actually went for Kerry, but "Weekly Reader" has much longer History..like back when schools taught Math, Reading and Writing.
Channel One News' OneVote 2004 ;;;
I am assuming by the "OneVote" that means there was only ONE vote
I heard CNN repeatedly bring up the Nickleodeon poll yesterday in which Kerry won. I wonder if they will even mention this poll in which Bush winds and which, by all accounts, was done in a more scientific way and is therefore much more representitive of reality in my opinion.
Just checked and I don't think its the same one. The Scholastic one has done 40 presidents and just got 2 wrong.
How bout that? This vote really could portend something significant.
W loses with the Nick crowd to kerry but wins the teen vote. Great news. The little kids, God Bless them do not have to pay taxes on their lemondade stands. Yet! The teens, who do have summer jobs, realize how high their taxes are. Bet 4 years ago, these same teens did give the nod to Gore. It gives me great hope that the little ones from the Nick crowd will follow suit.
Lets hope we keep them in our world as they get older.
I can honestly say that none of my kids will watch the current crop of evening Nick shows.
My kid was over at the University last night and was asked to take a poll/questionaire by some speech students.
Who are you voting for and why? (he's 17, but that's not the point): "George Bush. He has a clear plan, he does what he says, I agree with his handling of the Iraq war and he is a leader"
Stunned silence from the group taking the poll.
"was the Scholastic poll the "Weekly Reader" poll or has that one not come out yet?"
I believe the "Weekly Reader" results come out on Monday.
Good...lets hope Bush defeats kerry in the actual election with the same margin.
