Two anecdotes to respond with.

I have a friend who has left his career in the airline industry as a mechanic. He was laid off after 9-11-2001 and was about to be laid off again (just about the time he would get vested he was on the first to get cut list).

He knew that his taxes would go up under Kerry (his own perception, not anything I ever said). He never talked about the war.

I was hanging out at his house and I had put MTV on his tv (I don't have cable/satellite and at least try to get a taste for "popular culture" at times). There were a couple of back to back episodes of a car customizing show; we both dig cars even if we hold more to older chassis's.

I saw a "Rock the Vote" spot telling the lie about Bush's draft (this was about 2 months ago). He already knew it was crap (in part from an email from me). I also pointed out that they were INTERRUPTING THE MTV SHOWS to have a special "Rock the Vote" moment (about every 10 minutes).

He knew from his own experience that this whole "get out the idiot vote" movement (not just on MTV) is a DNC sponsored deal.

I do not know if he will vote for George Bush in November. I do know that he is real sour on Kerry and the DNC. We are in Texas so his vote will mostly be symbolic.

My other anecdote was something I overheard a couple discussing at a restaurant. I could not tell their politics (I suspect conservative). The mother was discussing how the daughter (not present) had heard about "Bush's Draft". She later learned that it was a lie and fully understood it (did not see it to be a cover). She said that she may not vote this year (possibly her first election) since she didn't know who she could trust (even though there were no examples of the Bush campaign distorting their positions or Kerry's).

Thank you WeeGee, Aye those of us use to this pied piper can see thru it and know it for what it is. Your second anecdote really hits home about my post. My daughter first heard of Rock the Vote on Radio. With the mantra your vote counts..and how important one vote can be..I'm sure many of us have seen the same commercial on TV. When a young person who at that age wants to do what for many is a very adult thing to do Vote, and have been taught in school ..hopefully..just how cherished a persons vote is in America. Then the people you first put your trust in burst your dream...To some young voters it might forever leave them repulsed by even the word voting. MTV again screwing more kids than Times Square has light bulbs.
My hope is this young woman finds her way past the wolves to grandma's house on election day and calls GWB the lumberjack to do what he does best./grin an odd metaphor but I couldn't resist it's late here. I know my girl will.
