President Bush and Sen. John Kerry can be grateful that at least one British rock star is keeping his opinions to himself. Unlike Sting - who this week told a German newspaper that Kerry lacks humor but that he would "rather vote for a chimpanzee than Bush" - Mick Jagger believes in letting England's former colony sort out its own affairs.
On Monday, when we ran into Jagger at the premiere of "Alfie" (he and Dave Stewart did the soundtrack), we asked if he'd been following the presidential race.
"How can you avoid it?" laughed the Rolling Stone, who'd been watching the candidates' stump speeches earlier in the day.
Jagger, who lived on the upper West Side for many years, said: "I feel very much at home in America. I've spent half my adult life here. I have many personal feelings. But I'm from the school that considers it impolite to comment on other people's elections."
He went on: "Now if I had the vote - and I should have, as I pay so much in taxes - I would have a lot to say."
Jagger wasn't shy about rebutting a British report about some renovations he was said to be doing on his London flat. The Daily Mail reported last week that the 5-foot-8 singer had spent a fortune lowering the floor of his home so that his 6-foot-4 girlfriend, L'Wren Scott, would have plenty of headroom.
"Rubbish," Jagger, 61, said. "No one has been able to believe that paper since 1904."
Of course, that's hearsay since even the Wrinkly Rocker wasn't around then.
We will note, though, that on Monday night, Miss Scott was wearing flats.
I've always thought Mick was a Tory. The guy is a smart businessman, and he still kicks ass over pretenders half his age. Rock on Mick!!!
Better news after that Sting Ping.
He went on: "Now if I had the vote - and I should have, as I pay so much in taxes - I would have a lot to say."
hmmm.....I wonder if he's making a political statement???
I can appreciate this statement.
Intriguing...
Bingo. Mr. Jagger has kept his head over a monumental career in a monumentally whacked out business. I admire the man. His refusal to spout off speaks volumes.
You might be pleasantly surprised by his solo release "Goddess in the Doorway." Read the lyrics, note the guest musicians, and dig the theme.
He does indeed rock on, getting better as he does.
"But I'm from the school that considers it impolite to comment on other people's elections."
Too bad the readers of the Guardian who sent all those letters to Ohio didn't share Mick's beliefs.
No matter what he pays here, it would be tons more in the UK.
That's Jaggerese for "Go Bush".
Gimme Mick, gimme Mick,
biggest hair, bulging eyes,
lips so thick,
Are you woman , are you man?
I'm your biggest funked up fan,
(repeat)
So rock me,
and roll me,
til I'm sick.
Mick's always been an astute businessman and a smart guy.
Nevertheless, whatever his reasons are Im glad he chose to Sthu about our election.
Refreshing isnt it?
Im running out of people to listen to and watch for entertainment!
"But I'm from the school that considers it impolite to comment on other people's elections."
Rock stars spout off about politics in direct proportion to their diminishing talent. Sting and Bruce are jokes. Son of gym coach, Mick still delivers the goods. I always thought Mick was secretly clean-cut. The above quote shows why mick has longevity.
Mick Jagger, Joy, from "Goddess in the Doorway." Pete Townsend and Bono guest on this tune.
Speaking of Bono, I'm not really a U2 fan, but this song Vertigo is hot and I can't wait for the album, despite its name.
didn't mean to get off-point.
Ha! I knew the Stones were my favorite band for a reason.
Course, Mick is a lib, I'm pretty sure.
(For once, he kept his mouth shut. No small feat, keeping that shut.)
sounds like a closet conservative
I think Mick attended the London School of Economics at one point.
So far we have Jagger, Alice Cooper, and Roger McGuinn on record for the "shut up and sing" concept. Any others?
You are right, Mick holds a degree from LSE. It is no wonder he and other Stones have amassed and kept much of their money, while others (McCartney comes immediately to mind), have trouble holding on to a lot of theirs.
