Dear rabidralph,
You'll find a wide diversity of opinion here at FR regarding teachers, education, and schools. Everything from "It's child abuse not to homeschool your kids, and all teachers are socialist idiots," to, "Teachers are touched by the grace of God with a special divine supernatural ability to handle large numbers of rugrats."
And everything in between.

Oh, so now, FR supports teachers? There are all sorts of clashing opinions about everything on this most excellent board. (BBQ threads often turn into open warfare.)
My sister and my mama were p s teachers as well as several aunts and cousins. Do I support them? Yes. Do we emulate them?
Nope. We homeschool.
Now if my sister could have taught my boys, I would have them in her school; because she had the guts to read the Scriptures and pray with her kids every day. Course it was a small school out in the boonies. But, you ought to see the scrapbook her last class made for her.
Such opportunities are few and far between.

Good question, but rereading the #1 post, I am thinking beyond the occupation of teacher to just the act of teaching or role modeling. Teachers surround us in all walks of life and all points of life. Mothers and fathers try to be the first teachers of a child, grand parents, too.
And most here know the difference between a real "teacher" in public, private, or home school and a slacker protected by union rules. In this case, as stainlessbanner wrote, we have a real First Lady who is still a teacher.
