The No Skin Zone: Bill O'Reilly's obsession with porn.
Slate ^ | October 19, 2004 | Michael Hastings

Posted on 10/20/2004 1:13:02 AM PDT by MadIvan

If you're a regular viewer of Bill O'Reilly's show, you probably weren't so surprised by the lurid details in Andrea Mackris' sexual harassment suit, which alleges, among other things, that the host "babbled perversely" to her over the phone while enjoying an X-rated video. On air, O'Reilly has long demonstrated a fascination with pornography that borders on an unhealthy obsession.

Whether interviewing X-rated actress and author Jenna Jameson (does she feel any responsibility, he asked, if a girl decides to go have "sex with three guys at one time?") or commenting on a Paris Hilton video (he said she "romped around in front of the camera" appearing "sober and compliant"), O'Reilly rarely misses a chance for a sleazy riff. Here's the money passage from his interview with Jameson two years ago.

O'Reilly really should switch to taking cold showers, I think.

I happen to think O'Reilly was largely set up and I'm not an O'Reilly fan. I've largely quit watching Fox shows due to their ridiculous fascination with the female body. Even my husband stopped watching the Factor because of it. They flaunt it, then voice objections and morality. Sneer. Yeah right. I simply got tired of Britney Spears boobs in my face first thing in the morning and felt sorry for Mom's trying to feed their kids while diving for the remote. I switched to Imus.

I think O'Reilly set himself up and someone else took advantage of his follies to encourage and then set him for a bigger fall.

O'Reilly was probably only a dabbler in pornography when the thing started, but after flirting and a few late night talks... The hormones started raging and she pushed him along until finally he found himself where he is now.

Up a creek.

Bill O'Reilly's hypocrisy isn't exactly news. What's impressive is the depth of it on this subject. O'Reilly has ragged on Howard Stern for having a show that "traffics in sex." But the only difference between them is that Stern is honest enough to admit having smut on the brain.

Not sure what the author is getting at here. If he's comparing what O'Reilly does privately (watching porn and talking dirty) and what Howard Stern does publically (promoting and trafficking in it) there is no comparison. If he is comparing O'Reilly's show (dabbling in sex stories from time to time) and Stern's show (sex is the show) then there is still no comparison. Stern's public sexual antics damage a lot more people than BOR's private antics.

Okay, I haven't been a big fan of O'Reilly for a year or two now. The guy probably does have a problem with porn and has probably engaged in extra-martial activities. It wasn't too hard for me to believe any of that. It's also not too hard to believe that this woman was a willing participant. Something went wrong, she got angry, and now wants BOR to pay up. Isn't the first time--won't be the last.

I hope O'Reilly and his wife can get some help. O'Reilly's got a huge ego so he may not think or admit he has done anything wrong.

If his wife is a normal woman, I can't imagine this is any fun for her. They've got two small children to think about. Wish he had thought about them a little more than The Factor in his pants.

I am not entirely crazy about this article - but what I think the heart of the matter is this: O'Reilly may or may not be guilty of what Mackris is saying. I actually think he's innocent; there are too many loose threads in the story, such as Mackris returning to work for him after leaving. However, O'Reilly has not helped himself at all with his fixations. Secondly, it is clear that his ego is out of control. Hopefully recent events will serve as a necessary corrective.

Regards, Ivan

I never liked O'Reilly he always gave me the creeps (how can one person be that fond of themselves). I don't trust people who say they are in the middle of the road. It means they are lying to seem objective or too stupid to think issues through. Thankfully my husband stopped watching after he was completely unfair to the Swiftees. Now we come to learn he's a pervert, this all fits my world view. I wish Fox played Brit Hume in primetime or give Ann Coulter her own show!

My thoughts exactly. His creepiness is enough to make me believe her.

An obsession with porn is a sure indicator of a person who's not 'getting any', to put it crudely. It's the licentiousness of the unwillingly celibate.

I get the sense that O'Reilly thinks he's some sort of Lothario and perhaps this is where it comes from. It would not surprise me if he chatted up most of his female guests.

I've largely quit watching Fox shows due to their ridiculous fascination with the female body.

You should avoid art galleries, then, especially those showing anything post Medieval.

Has anyone noticed that whenever the O'Reilly show ever talked about pornography they would show censored pictures of Internet pornography for 30 sec or more, sometimes imposed over the interview?

I wonder if O'Reilly was behind this.

Good summary of the situation. As for me, I've deprogrammed the O'Reilly Factor from my Tivo after this story broke, although truth be told, I've only skimmed his programs for several months now. Once he trashed the Swifties, that was pretty much the final straw. I will miss watching Newt Gingrich's appearances, but that's about it.

Do I think this Mackris should get a penny out of this suit where she so obviously baited him on throughout the several months this played out? Hell NO.

Did my opinion of O'Reilly fall dramatically anyway after this story came out? Hell YES. It's just sad that his immaturity and ego did not allow him to think of all the pain his wife is now enduring, not to mention the damage he's inflicting on Fox News.

Now we come to learn he's a pervert, this all fits my world view.

An accusation is not the same as evidence. Especially when the accusation comes from Slate. Liberals think they have given conservatives a black eye by going after O'R. They don't get or at least refuse to acknowledge that he is no darling of the right. They are gleefully painting this picture to give the uninformed the impression that all conservatives are hypocrites. The is a big score for them on top of the Limbaugh story. The hypocrites however are themselves. These are the same people who defended Clinton's behavior in the White House. It was all a private matter then now O'R's private behavior is being presented as a public outrage. I find myself willing to give O'R the benefit of the doubt not because I like him but because of the people accusing him. He may be a jerk but the people going after him have a very anti-right agenda and will damage anyone who they remotely preserve as right wing. This over all has little to do with O'R and a whole lot to do with damaging Fox.
