Back Together Again: Original Duran Duran

NEW YORK - They played the obligatory classics: "Hungry Like the Wolf" and "Girls on Film." But when Simon Le Bon ripped into the chorus of the new single "(Reach Up for the) Sunrise," the sun suddenly illuminated Times Square as if to officially mark a new day for Duran Duran.

As the original five members performed for "Good Morning America" last week, it seemed the planets had finally aligned for a band that had been ignored through its ever-changing lineup and lackluster albums of the past ten years.

The British quintet once created a fan hysteria that was compared to the Beatles', and they are largely credited for ushering in the music video age with their innovative and exotic clips. Still, until recently, they couldn't buy the sort of publicity they're now enjoying.

"We are really pleased to be back in the history books where for a while it looked as though we were being written out of them," Le Bon told The Associated Press, commenting on the Lifetime Achievement award MTV finally bestowed upon the video pioneers last year and the sudden excitement over Duran Duran's 12th album, "Astronaut."

I saw Dale Bozzio open up for Benjamin Orr (former co-lead singer/bassist of the Cars) about 6-7 years ago. There was bad weather and some set delay if I remember correctly. I was one of a handful (no exaggeration) left in this club by time the show ended.

Hey neighbor, do you know how to post an article? Our disgusting paper today surprised everyone with a Thursday endorsement of Kerry. Once again spitting in the eye of our military. I hope they all cancel their subscriptions, we need to put this paper out of business. It's up on pilotonline.com, looks like Kerry's people wrote it word for word.

There was a brief Asia reunion around 89-90 of the original line-up but with with Pat Thrall replacing Steve Howe on guitar. They did a Moscow gig and released a few singles and then broke up again.

Geoff Downes (who did a stint as a Buggle and a Yes-man in 1980) secured the rights to the band's name and retooled it as a hair metal band throughout the 90's with John Payne as bassist/singer.

John Wetton is one-half solo artist and one-half nostalgia act these days mixing his adult contemprary stuff in with songs from his Crimson/ UK/ Asia days.

I think that is when they released a greatest hits (with new tracks). One new song "Days Like These" was really good.

Hi. Where do you live? I'm in Chesapeake. No, I don't know how to post an article, but I probably should learn.

I'm not suprised at all that the Pilot endorsed Kerry. They've been endorsing Democrats for years. What I can't understand is why they are still in business. Hampton Roads is an overwhelmingly conservative area. I wish conservatives here would just stop buying it. We need another newspaper.

Another good song/video: "Chequered Love" by Kim Wilde.

I thought the worst was "We Built This City" by Starship. Ahh, yes...that stupid video. Not helped at all by the presence of the effeminate Mickey Thomas and the waaaaaay too damn old Grace Slick...

I actually think Slick had a good voice but that was not her best work.
