Back Together Again: Original Duran Duran
Yahoo ^ | 10/19/2004 | AP

NEW YORK - They played the obligatory classics: "Hungry Like the Wolf" and "Girls on Film." But when Simon Le Bon ripped into the chorus of the new single "(Reach Up for the) Sunrise," the sun suddenly illuminated Times Square as if to officially mark a new day for Duran Duran.

As the original five members performed for "Good Morning America" last week, it seemed the planets had finally aligned for a band that had been ignored through its ever-changing lineup and lackluster albums of the past ten years.

The British quintet once created a fan hysteria that was compared to the Beatles', and they are largely credited for ushering in the music video age with their innovative and exotic clips. Still, until recently, they couldn't buy the sort of publicity they're now enjoying.

"We are really pleased to be back in the history books where for a while it looked as though we were being written out of them," Le Bon told The Associated Press, commenting on the Lifetime Achievement award MTV finally bestowed upon the video pioneers last year and the sudden excitement over Duran Duran's 12th album, "Astronaut."

You reminded me of something I totally (did I just say totally?) forgot about when you mentioned falling asleep in front of the TV watching the Braves. Remember the Rick Camp game -- July 4, 1985? I had to search to get the specifics. I fell asleep with the TV on and when I woke up, the game was still going: it went 19 innings, ended at 3:55 a.m. then fireworks went off at 4:01 a.m.

We had a store like that, although we did not know the owners personally, my girlfriends and I would ride the Miami mass transit(a couple of buses and the metrorail) just to buy exotic albums we could not find in the stores. Here's an 80's word for you IMPORTS! LOL
I wish I could remember the name of that store.

Oh I love the Missing Persons!! Their song "Words" ought to be the Teen Angst Anthem of the 80s.

Words

Do you hear me
Do you care
Do you hear me
Do you care

My lips are moving and the sound's coming out
The words are audible but I have my doubts
That you realize what has been said
You look at me as if you're in a daze
It's like the feeling at the end of the page
when you realize you don't know what you just read

What are words for when no one listens anymore
What are words for when no one listens
What are words for when no one listens it's no use talkin
at all

I might as well go up and talk to a wall
'cause all the words are having no effect at all
It's a funny thing am I all alone

Something has to happen to change the direction
What little filters through is giving you the wrong
impression
It's a sorry state I say to myself

What are words for when no one listens anymore
What are words for when no one listens
What are words for when no one listens it's no use talkin
at all

Do you hear me
Do you care
Do you hear me
Do you care

Let me get by
Over your dead body
Hope to see you soon
When will I know
Doors three feet wide with no locks open
Walking always backwards in the faces of strangers
Time could be my friend
But it's less than nowhere now
less than nowhere now
less than nowhere now
now
ow ow ow

Pursue it further and another thing you'll find
Not only are they deaf and dumb they could be going blind
and no one notices
I think I'll dye my hair blue

Media overload bombarding you with action
It's getting near impossible to cause distraction
Someone answer me before I pull out the plug

What are words for when no one listens anymore
What are words for when no one listens
What are words for when no one listens it's no use talkin
at all

What are words for when no one listens anymore
What are words for when no one listens
What are words for when no one listens it's no use
talkin
at all

Do you hear me
Do you care
Do you hear me
Do you care
tell me what are words for
Do you hear me
tell me what are words for
Do you care
tell me what are words for
Do you hear me
so tell me what are words for
Do you care
so tell me what are words for
Do you hear me
tell me what are words for
so tell me what are words for
Do you care
so tell me what are words for
Do you hear me
tell me what are words for
so tell me what are words for
Do you care
so tell me what are words for

Oh oh. My store was in Pembroke Pines/Hollywood. I got to know the owners solely by visiting the store. Yup, imports. I ordered a 45 (remember 45s?) by the Police with "Dead End Job" on the B-side (remember B-sides?) LOL! I thought that was the coolest song ever and just had to have it. It was ordered from Belgium I think. Now of course it is on the Police's box set which is one of the best box sets ever released.

Holy crap--just a stone's throw? We took a ride, but I don't remember going that far north. I want to say our store was in the Coral Gables area--wish I could remember the name of the place

Same here, there one day gone the next. I recall getting this huge (and I stress huge) poster of Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder for the Ebony and Ivory song they did (I have to admit I detest that song...LOL!) but my cousin was a Beatles freak and I got it for him. The store I visited was on Pines/Hollywood Blvd in bewteen a Mr. Grocer (are they still around?) and the Pembroke Diner across from MacArthur High School. My college is in Opa-Locka.

Man, your store's location sounds familiar too. It's been 15 to 20 years though, no wonder neither of us can remember--LOL

Check this out.

This is one of the ones I have stored somewhere--look at that b-side--Faster then Light. I'd forgotten all about that. My husband got me one of those vintage looking record players last year when they were all the rage--might be time to pull some vinyl out and play the b-sides I'd forgotten about. Wow!

I have Edward Scissorhands soundtrack.
I could never get my hands on their greatest hits, which is probably out of print by now.

Oh, he was so cool. Held up real well, too.
I also liked Rick Allen from Def Leppard - sheesh!
Of course, I find myself liking Rick Springfield again - what a pisser he is.

Terry Bozio's wife is named Dale Bozio, and she was close to Frank Zappa and a former Playboy centerfold (my brother liked her).

I saw Billy Idol in concert three years ago and he still looks great. And he sounded just the same, too. I screamed like I did when I was 17 and my husband just smiled tolerantly.

Regarding Def Leppard...I was always a Joe Elliot fan. What was (is) your favorite Def Leppard song? "Bringin' on the Heartbreak" was my favorite.

I was going to go see Rick Springfield and the Fixx when they were in town several months ago, but was too sick to go.

Did you see any of the Bands Reunited episodes on VH1?

I missed that on VH1, and my sister chastised me about it constantly. I figure I'll catch them one day.
I love Bringin' on the Heartbreak - I'm such a traditionalist! Joe Elliott is someething else - I like him, too. Did you see that VH1 movie about the band? It was great. They just aren't the same since Steve Clark died.

They reunited so many great bands from the '80's. I imagine they'll put them on video and sell them at some point.

Yes, I did see the Def Leppard movie and really enjoyed it. I knew they were wild, but I didn't know they were that out of control. And I agree about Steve Clark's death. But Rick Allen's story is so inspirational and the band's loyalty to him was impressive.
