Neither. Marriage was always about the offspring, it was never about the adults. Marriage protects the welfare of children and as a result society is enhanced.

Interesting, I will credit for that reply. So what about those normal men and women who cannot reproduce, should they be denied marriage?

Its called the potential to reproduce, as far as I know John and Tom do not have the same potential.
