I hate to have to ask this, but I guess it's the only way I'll find out. What exactly does the "ping" funtion at the bottom of the page do?

If you mean this: "Pings · Mail" at the center bottom, clicking on it takes you to your My Comments page where you can see pings (messages) to you.
