Mel Martinez supporters face off against Castor-ites in Tampa, FL (Lots o' pix!)

To give Florida Republican U.S. Senator hopeful, Mel Martinez, a show of support last night before his debate with Betty ("Islamic terrorist sympathizer") CastroCastor, myself, my wife, and three stalwart individuals from our Republican club here in Venice, packed up and went north to Tampa in my minivan. I'm glad we did, because, as is usual with street rallies, every man counts. Since George Bush was in town for a big rally today, most people where flocking to that event, leaving the Senate race notably bereft of support. Personally, I don’t party when there’s work to be done.

I brought a couple of big American flags and the bullhorn which was first used at our "Bumper stick-a-thon" in Venice, FL last Saturday (OK, so this was the week before, but you get the idea!). I originally bought this after the Code Pinkos protested Katherine Harris in Venice last Wednesday. Well, I'm very glad I did, since the lefties had one of their own. Funny thing is, when you bring a bullhorn, everyone sort of thinks you're leading the pack (especially when you're the only person in the crowd lucky enough to also be wearing a "Unidos con Mel Martinez" t-shirt! $;-). The newsies certainly seemed to have this misconception, but what the heck, you just gotta roll with it.

To make a long story short, we met them man for man, and threw a cold blanket over their whole love-in. It was great fun, actually, and we had many good people on our side. Lots of young people, too – including a group of teenage girls who were absolutely fantastic! At one point, we were singing "God Bless America" with them leading the group (through the bullhorn, naturally!), and we invited the Castorites to join in – hung ‘em up! They simply didn’t know how to respond. Newsies appeared out of the woodwork, and a great time was had by all. Who knows, maybe we even changed a few minds.

After over an hour of yelling through the bullhorn at the top of my lungs, my throat is ripped today, but it was worth it. We met the opposition and they were ours. We really made a difference. The fact that four different news stations that were there limited their coverage to just a few seconds of each side (actually, FOX 13 just showed us $;-) tells you that since we were successful, since otherwise you know they would have been crowing how the "Castor supporters were met unopposed".

Now, without further ado, here’s the pics…

Four stalwarts from our Venice group confer with a one of Mel Martinez’s people on the ground, who unfortunately disappeared when the shouting started.

Walking towards the WFLA (NBC affiliate) building, where the debate was being held, with Castorites in the distance.

Close up of Castorites group in front of the WFLA building.

The Radisson hotel in Tampa, where the debate-watching party was held after the street-theatre was over.

Castorites along Parker Street.

Opposing Martinez supporters on Parker Street.

For a little while, the two groups mingled, but soon after separated out, so we could figure out which candidate the cars passing by were honking for!

Venice stalwarts, minus yours truly.

As the two camps face off, the newsies start appearing.

Two opposing groups.

The full group of Castorites.

The full group of Martinez supporters.

Martinez group close-up. The teenage girls who rocked the house are right in the center, holding the "We love you Mel" and "Kids love you Mel" signs.

The street-theatre over, the debate party commences. Most of the people in this room were not on the street to face the Castorites. Don’t want to get those nice clothes all sweaty, you understand.

This van was parked out in front of the main entrance to the Radisson. I think if you take all those stickers off, the thing would fall apart! $;-)

This courageous fellow in the cowboy hat was out on Ashley Street all by his lonesome, holding a Bush/Cheney sign and waving to the passing cars. You gotta love it!

Watching Mel kick Castor’s butt the debate. If anyone has any photo-editing software that can lighten and sharpen these images, feel free! I don’t have any software for that on my PC.

The teenage girls who did so well against the Castorites wait outside the Radisson main entrance to greet Mel.

Ready to give Mel a hero’s welcome. Many of these girls were home-schooled, and I tell you this – they are a light-year ahead of the curve when it comes to being politically aware and active. With kids like this among America’s youth, my faith in the future of our Constitutional Republic is greatly restored!

Mel Martinez arrives!

High-fives for the girls!

Mel greets the crowd outside the Radisson. Con mucho gusto, Senor!

Mel speaks to the debate-party crowd inside the Radisson. Again, if anyone can fix up these images, please feel free.

Soon-to-be Republican U.S. Senator from Florida, Mel Martinez.

The audience listens to Mel speak. He kept is short and sweet.

So, mission accomplished! That’s all for now, folks!

The commercials his opponent ran during the Bosox/Yankees game were stupid. I couldn't even follow what they were trying to say about Mel.

Being married to a Cuban woman I feel ethically obligated to tell the Castor supporters to slowly place their signs on the ground, back away, and for God's sakes, don't say anything.

Joe, youre the best. A true Patriot. And a scrapper. (Whenever you have an event you feel might get contentious, call Joe.. he LOVES IT!)

I would have loved to have been there but I'm doing 18 hours of work a day on about a 100 projects for President Bush, Mel, Katherine Harris and others. I did call into the SCHNITT SHOW (970am) and got on. I commented on how lame the CASTRO side is in trying to blame Mel for things Betty Castro did..(and didn't do) in harboring a terrorist.
I'm confident Mel is going to win.. as will President Bush. Please God, give us at least 52 Senators. With that we can probably get at least 8 from the other side to break these silly fillibusters and get something done in the next 4 years.

I agree, I have great moral problems voting for a lying filthy trial lawyer. But better that than an anti-gun terrorist loving leftist.

So as much as it pains me to do so, I am going to hold my nose and pull the lever on scumbag Mel.

Could you provide some information on Mel's activities as a trial lawyer? I would like to do some homework.

Thanks,

aint that the truth. I was a strong supporter of McCollum, but the state party turned their back on him. Mel's got a good last name that will help the President, so I guess all's fair in love, war, and politics, but I woulda liked to have an expert on terrorism in the U.S. Senate, rather than a lap-dog like Mel. At least we'll have a Republican "Yes" Man.
