You may be right, though JPII has been reluctant to pull the trigger on excommunication. And it could backfire if the Church made a big deal of it before the election.

It would be devastating to Christianiy, the Church and human civilization that a person who voted against the ban on partial birth abortion, is a Communion going, self-proclaimed Catholic, has become president of the United States and Leader of the Free World
