Veteran files libel suit against director of anti-Kerry film

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A Vietnam veteran shown in a documentary criticizing Sen. John Kerry's anti-war activities filed a libel lawsuit against the movie's director Monday, saying the film falsely calls him a fraud and a liar.

Kenneth J. Campbell, now a professor at the University of Delaware, said in the suit that "Stolen Honor: Wounds That Never Heal" combines footage of him appearing at a 1971 war protest with narration that claims that many of the supposed veterans who took part in the event were later "discovered as frauds" who "never set foot on the battlefield, or left the comfort of the States, or even served in uniform."

The suit said viewers would be left with the perception that Campbell had lied about his military service.

Campbell attached copies of his military records to the suit, showing that he received the Purple Heart medal and eight other medals, ribbons and decorations for his service as an artillery forward observer in Vietnam in 1968 and 1969.

I had noticed good while ago Kerry was very careful to qualify his "atrocities". It makes him sound like he is admitting to quite a lot, lending credance to the other allegations, while he is, in fact, risking very little in this exposure.

Many were. So unless they said this guy in particular, then sorry, *BUZZ*, no libel.

I wonder if the Per-fesser was one of those anti-war Vets who tossed their medals and ribbons over the White House fence

lets see if the Per-fessor can produce his ACTUAL medals and ribbons...

Let see if you can learn to read. Thinking is out of the question.

I wonder if Steve Pitkin remembers Kenneth Campbell from the Winter Soldier hearings?
Steve is shown with Kerry just before the clip showing Campbell in Stolen Honor.
Steve has signed an affidavit stating that Kerry coached him to lie about atrocities.

Maybe all the Vietnam vets can sue Kerry for libel since he labelled them all war criminals.

Better yet -- how about some real Viet Nam Vets sue Campbell for the egregious things done to them by him and his ilk on their return to the US?

(shrug)--I'm sure O'Neil saw this coming. I'm surprised more suits haven't been filing suits.

Some of the other Winter Soldiers were soldiers, but massively overstated their combat credentials. For instance, Sergeant Don Pugsley was injured in a helicopter crash during in-country training and never spent a day in the bush, but he's sold as a Special Forces Project Delta veteran. It's a lie; all of the VVAW is a lie, except the part where they met under the NVA flag and chanted for an NVA victory.

As far as records provided by Kenneth Campbell -- read the book Stolen Valor (not to be confused with the movie Stolen Honor) and you will see how easily phonies get bogus 214s. I would ask Ass. Prof. Campbell to sign SF180 like his man, Kerry, won't, to allow the press to get his records directly from the US Military.

After all, would his college accept for credit a transcript hand-carried by a student? It would not. Why should we?

[ "Kenneth J. Campbell, now a professor at the University of Delaware" ]

That in itself is proof enough of a treasonous bent.. you can't get tenure in Delaware if you love the United States.. or even LIKE IT...

In discovery on this case, can the defendants ask for Kerry's complete record to be released? What are the chances of this succeeding?

In the two-and-one-half weeks before the election--zero.

I don't see how they would have legal standing for such a thing, since Kerry isn't the one claiming libel and the plaintiff doesn't seem to be claiming any direct involvement with Kerry.

See the federal case Pesta v. 60 Minutes in the Eastern District of Michigan - it turned, to a degree, on this sort of issue.

I'll see if I can find the jury instructions in my file somewhere.

Good point.

This guy has no case. Why doesn't he sue Kerry for defaming him? Probably too much time has elapsed.

Anyway, this gives the film more publicity and might lead to some very interesting discovery. This whiner might well end up regretting he got involved.

Good fisking of the Kerry quote. I would also like to point out one lie you missed.

I used 50 caliber machine guns, which we were granted and ordered to use, which were our only weapon against people. [emphasis mine]

Kerry himself famously back-shot a fleeing VC (which I see nothing wrong with, by the way -- guy went to war, guy can be killed if he doesn't surrender) with an M16. He famously wounded himself with an M79. Not only did Swift crews carry such individual weapons, they also had mortars and .30 calibre (7.62mm) machine guns.

There are a number of extremely legitimate reasons for using the M2HB .20 calibre machine gun. The .50 give you increased range which lets you stand off outside the enemy's range if he only has .30 calibre weapons (a bit of an academic point in riverine operations where fights usually took place at spitball range). The .50 also has increased penetration which lets you engage enemy forces in log or mud fortifications or bunkers.

As far as Kerry's misdescription of the Free Fire zones, consider this: he must have known what the real ROE were (in FF zones and outside). Outside, you needed to be cleared for fire by several HQs inclusing the Vietnamese Province Chief's, unless you were actually under fire. Inside, you could fire on enemy troops without warning, because friendly troops were not there. In every case you could not fire on unarmed civilians -- that was, and is, a serious crime, and Kerry is a creep for suggesting it was SOP. The only Swift boat I ever heard of killing a civilian was his! And he reported the dead child as four dead VC.

Wouldn't that be AWESOME!
Wonder if the potential dollars would woo John Edwards into representing them in a class action libel suit.
