Islam has a long tradition of assassination. Muhammad ordered at least three assassinations. One of a female poet who was mocking him in verse.

Islamics using assassination as a tool of politics to get rid of a leader. You had the hashishan assassins of the Persian mountains whose fortress was impregnable. IOW they could reach out and assassinate but no one could reach them. Not until the Mongol Hulagu Khan decimated them and kicked to death their leader, "the old man of the mountain"

Saddam first big action when he was in his early 20s was to try and assassinate the Prime Minister.

7 October 1959 Saddam was a member of a Baath assassination team which attempted to assassinate the Prime Minister of Iraq, Gen. Abdel-Karim Kassem. Shot in the leg by the prime minister's bodyguard, Saddam fled to Syria, then Egypt.

=== Islam has a long tradition of assassination.

And ours has only begun ... as quietly announced from Crawford one Sunday in August, 2002.

If these are the modern day assassins, can we also consider Bin Laden, Zarquawi, et. al. the modern day "old men of the mountain"?. just extending the comparison,
