In California this election season, it's all about you-know-who. From one photograph to the next, in mailers promoting dozens of races on the Nov. 2 ballot, the only discernible difference is which Republican candidate happens to be standing at Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's side.
The same principle holds with many of the groups for or against this year's 16 ballot initiatives.
A door hanger distributed in Los Angeles County even implores voters to "join Arnold" by defeating two initiatives on which Schwarzenegger has taken no position.

Over the summer, during state budget negotiations, Schwarzenegger pressured the Legislature's leaders, implying he could win seats for Republicans this fall by targeting Democratic-controlled districts where voters crossed party lines to back him in last year's recall election.
---snip ---
While Schwarzenegger has endorsed more than 50 GOP candidates on the ballot and appeared at private fund-raisers to help some of them, he has stumped publicly for just one, state Senate candidate Abel Maldonado of Santa Maria.

He hasn't done squat to influence the Senate race.

Maybe Bill Jones could put his face on milk cartons?
"Missing in California"
Editorial: Kerry for president
When he campaigned in 2000, George W. Bush said he would be a "uniter, not a divider." The closeness of that election made that unlikely, and the course of his administration has made the very idea preposterous. The nation has paid a steep price for Bush's arrogance - mounting deficits and debt at home, loss of standing and effectiveness abroad.
KERRY WOULD BE A RESPONSIBLE PRESIDENT
The argument for electing John Kerry president is straightforward. He would be a more responsible president than George W. Bush. Kerry would be more responsible in maintaining America's standing among other nations, without sacrificing its independence or risking its security. He would be more responsible in reversing the plunge to record budget deficits. He would be a more responsible in protecting the environment.
BUSH HAS BEEN RECKLESS WITH AMERICA'S FUTURE
On Nov. 2, America should elect a new president. George W. Bush has lacked distinction, good judgment and candor. He has been reckless with the country's future abroad and at home.
No, he hasn't, but he sure did his part to help get Jones nominated.
I've been getting mail from Jones, telling me that Boxer is vulnerable, and asking for money. As if any paltry sum I could send him will help make up for the millions he has been unable to raise, and make any difference against the millions Boxer has in her war chest.
In order to keep Kaloogian out, per the RINO New Majority model.
Yes, wasn't that a convenient ploy. ;-)
Special K would have kicked Boxer's arse from here to FRoghanistan, East of Moderatia.
But we wouldn't want someone who gave life to the recall , only to see it hijacked by moderates, running now, would we?
It wouldn't in the CA GIP playbook. ;-)
Yep, makes me want to heave. So we'll have Boxer for another six years. On a side note, the NRA scores Boxer with an "F", while rating Jones with an impressive "D".
Sacramento Bee (EXCERPTED)
Although Bill Jones' fund-raising efforts fizzled in his last statewide campaign, Republicans again pinned their hopes on him this year to challenge U.S. Sen. Barbara Boxer because Jones had new ammunition.
The longtime legislator and rancher's own wealth had ballooned along with the stock of the ethanol-producing company he started.
Jones would, GOP strategists hoped, write a large personal check to his own campaign to compete with the Democratic incumbent, who had amassed a multimillion-dollar war chest for her bid for a third term.
But with less than three weeks left until the election, Jones has yet to make the donation. His campaign has sputtered, gaining little traction as a serious bid to replace Boxer.
As of Friday, Jones' campaign reported $840,000 cash on hand, less than he needs for a statewide television ad. Polls show he trails by double digits. Experts say it will be difficult, if not impossible, for him to shrink the gap.
Sounds like with all the grumbling about Republicans in California that a "Conservative" party (like in NY) will eventually be formed to spoil/endorse Republican races in order to get a consistent message out.
