Department of Public Safety authorities have put school bus drivers from around the state on a heightened state of alert regarding the possibility of terrorist activity, including those in Payson, Pine and Tonto Basin.
State authorities have asked all school bus drivers to be alert for any possible terrorist activity in the next six weeks.
A Sept. 28 information bulletin from DPS Student Transportation Supervisor Vicki Barnett to PUSD Director of Support Operations Joe Martin, directed bus drivers to "pay particular attention to any unusual activity around school buses; to unusual vehicles; to vehicles repeatedly seen in the vicinity; and, to any vehicles or individuals in unauthorized locations."

does anyone know if the part about homeland security agents finding school bus routes in the possession of terror suspects in the US is true or not?

Someone crippled a lot of school buses in Charlotte NC a few weeks ago, presumeably a school prank. It was right after the Beslan massacre, but I never heard anyone discussing how vulnerable the buses would be to bombs if a kid can get in and disable a large number of these things.
About a month ago, I was in a local shopping center in Ohio where our school district parks their buses during the daytime hours until PM pickup. There were about twenty-five buses. I got to thinking about that and thought it very reckless and irresponsible so I called the school district and complained. The receptionist on the phone said she would relay it to the superintendent. This past week I checked it out again and sure enough, the buses were sitting there with the bus doors still open and unattended.
It's just a matter of time...
Won't make much noise in the media because it would remind people that we are at war with terrorists. Because Bush is aggressive against terrorism, it would push people towards supporting Bush. That would be counter to the media's agenda-President Kerry.
More than a year ago I contacted the DHS and warned them about this very possibility. I believe that there is a very real possibility that terrorists could target school buses in various cities and towns around the nation.
This would not only cause harm to a large number of children, it would also deal a serious blow to our economy by keeping working parents of school age children at home because of the fear of more strikes.

Not to take away anything from the seriousness of this, but, I don't know, I mean, how hard is it to figure out a school bus route?
A little before 8 am, they all start heading towards the school, right? And they probably follow about the same path back at 2, or 245.
I mean if the terrorists can't figure it out without a map, maybe we're ok on this one.

These monsters start going after our children and they will have called down the thunder -- it will be open season, no bag limit.
This alert should probably be going out to every state and school district in the union.

This has been a concern of mine since 9-11. In my community I've noticed at heightened times of alert, if there is a bus convoy (maybe three to five busses), you will see a sheriff's escort. Have seen that a couple times.
Had a conversation with a bus driver recently. They say they're aware of security, but since most are ladies, ages 50-60, usually (in my area) I'm not sure there'd be any way to defend against a problem. Face it. Soft targets are the reason we have to take the war on terror to THEM.
Bush knows that. Kerry...well, it's all a nuisance for him.
Hopefully security moms will come through Nov. 2.
Actually, the maps make me more concerned. Simultaneous attacks? How close to what buildings? It's hard to look into the mind of evil.
Simultaneous attacks, with explosive laden busses driven into the school yards. How hard is it to buy a used school bus? Or even to steal one? We can't provide police escorts for every bus in each school district, can we?
