Outrage That Rings False (Completely BARF ALERT!!!)
The Washington Post ^ | October 16, 2004 | Hilary Rosen

Posted on 10/16/2004 8:28:35 AM PDT by conservativo

Nicolle Devenish, communications director for the Bush-Cheney campaign, said Thursday that John Kerry will pay a heavy political price for what he did. Lynne Cheney, the vice president's wife, said, "This is a bad man."

The crime? John Kerry in the final presidential debate suggested that we are all God's children and used Mary Cheney as an example of a healthy gay person loved by her family.

The response from the Cheneys and the Bush campaign has been blatantly political. In fact, it is they who are using Mary Cheney -- using her now to score points against Kerry and John Edwards over an issue on which they themselves are guilty of the wrongs that Kerry and Edwards are fighting against. Even after almost 30 years in Washington, I am surprised by the overwhelming hypocrisy and meanness of the Bush reelection campaign.

Let's review the facts. Before the election season, this administration opposed every initiative to offer equality for gay men and lesbians. Indeed, it has gone out of its way to be punitive, with such actions as the Office of Personnel Management's announcement that the federal government has no intention of honoring the Clinton administration's order to add sexual orientation to anti-discrimination rules in the federal government.

After the debate, the vice president said of John Kerry: "This is a man who will say anything and do anything to get elected." Many people thought the same thing about Dick Cheney and President Bush on Feb. 24. That was the day the president announced to the country that heterosexual marriages are in trouble because gay people might someday have such a right in a few states. The crisis was so dire that he implored Congress to pass a constitutional amendment to permanently take away any rights gay men and lesbians...

This Post writer missed the gate at the beginning. Kerry's point was that Mary Cheney was BORN GAY.
How outrageous. As if Ketchup Man knows the inner workings of God's plan for an individual life that science has yet to unravel.
Much less to quote authoritatively about the DNA of another man's child in an effort to score political points.

"If Mary Cheney is fair game then so is Vanessa and Alexandra."

I'll run with that. What makes "AL" think she is sooooo special she needs to run around France in a thin dress showing off her ugly flap-jacks?

"The response from the Cheneys and the Bush campaign has been blatantly political."

This disingenuous quote from the article shows that Ms. Rosen has been reading the DNC handbook and is launching a 'pre-emptive attack.' The response from the Cheneys and the Bush campaign has been understated and perfectly understandable. It is the response from Liz Edwards and Kerry that has been purely political.

If Ms Rosen, like John Kerry, expects voters to believe that Kerry brought up Chaney's daughter for any reason other than to score political points, she is vastly underestimating the average American's BS detector.

It matters not that Mary Chaney is gay, what matters is that Kerry tried to use another candidate's child to score points in a debate. That shows his character, or lack thereof, and everyone who saw the debate knows it. Kerry is lower than a snake's belly and has half the charm of that reptile.

When Vice President Cheney spoke in Iowa in August this year

Cheney speaks in Davenport Iowa

he volunteered the fact that he has a lesbian daughter in his speech. Clearly Vice President Cheney does not equate being gay with being obese, a wino, a drug abuser, a womanizer, a rapist, etc. As a person with gay friends, neither do I.

I think harping on Kerry's reference to the fact that the Vice President's daughter is gay is not helping President Bush. We need to keep pointing out Kerry's liberal record and intention to reduce the issue of terrorism to a nuisance.

The difference between true conservatives and libs: one sees gays and lesbians as just friends and family, and the other sees them as friends, family, AND political pawns.

--"Even after almost 30 years in Washington, I am surprised by the overwhelming hypocrisy and meanness of the Bush reelection campaign."--

The meannness of the Bush campaign??

Is its Bush's people who stormtroop into steal things and fire shots into the other sides headquarters?

is it Bush's people who rip up little girls campaign signs, steal and vandalize signs they don't like and put swastikas on their lawn?

Is it Bush's people who made a documentary with no less than 59 fabrications in it?

Is it Bush's people that try to scare blacks into voting with phoney disencfranchisement accusations?

Is it Bush's people trying to to scare old people that their Social security will disappear, and telling lies to the young that they will be drafted?

Is it Bush's people promising they will make the paralyzed walk again?

Is it Bush's people trying to use the government to censor programs from the air airwaves because they don't like the political content?

Is it Bush's people who peddled forged documents and used their media lapdog to help them spread the disinformation?

Is it Bush's people who wrote a book about assassinating the president?

Is it Bush's people who protested (rioted) outside the republican convention to the tune of 1700 people arrested?

No

Those were Kerry's people.

exactly... Not only that Mary Cheney has a certian expectation to privacy. Even though she did do some campaigning. What the democrats don't seem to understand or if they do understand they are wilfully disregarding the fact. You cannot just use a private citizen as a tool of a political campagin.
1.) It violates their expectation of privacy
2.) The campagin can be held libel if an attack were to happen to Mary Cheney and it was tied back to the fact that she was mentioned. \
3.) This was an act that was desgined to try to get the hard right to change their vote.

It is deplorable dispicable and wrong.

Just because someone has choosen to reveal who they are does not mean that any group can use their name or likeness to promote their agenda. The log cabin republicans got in trouble for trying to do something similar with another openly gay politican.

You know, after I posted, I was afraid someone would take it that way, which was not my intent at all. I think, however, that Kerry et. al. believe that there are people, would-be Bush voters, who would and do equate homosexuality with those sort of things, and Kerry was pandering to that type of bigotry. I think that makes him as bad as a bigot himself. For him to try reaping electoral gains from the animosity of others toward homosexuals is pretty low. I wonder if any homosexual voters will consider that fact... that Kerry is trafficking in hatred toward them to try to boost his campaign. I am convinced that the reason for these comments by Kerry and Edwards was to try to alienate voters from Bush. Anyway, as I've posted elsewhere, I don't take issue with Mary Cheney's private life, but that is separate from my views on gay marriage, protected class, and other legal issues involving homosexuality. But I find it amazing that Kerry is apparently against homophobia... unless he can incite it to benefit himself. But I do apologize if my post offended you; it wasn't meant that way and I should have been more clear.

I'm glad that you do not harbor hatred toward gay people as a group. But I do not agree that Kerry's reference was an attempt to invoke the animosity of others. I thought it was an attempt to make President Bush look hypocritical because of his backing of a constitutional amendment to prohibit gay marriage.

I thought that Cheney's own public statement about his gay daughter showed that President Bush and his administration would not put up with homophobia. If there were any hatred out there, I thought he was giving notice that it was not welcome in the Republican party, and I admired that courage. That is why I am puzzled by the remarks made by Lynne Cheney and Vice-President Cheney after the debate. But if they agreed with your interpretation of Kerry's remarks, that would explain their anger.
