For Muslims, a Beleaguered Feeling

As Ramadan Begins, Many Say Sentiment Against Them Is Hardening

By Caryle Murphy

Many American Muslims believe that the U.S. government has contributed to the deepening of anti-Muslim sentiment by treating them more as foes than allies in the war against terrorism. They say the government has done this by singling out Muslims for special scrutiny at airports, investigating Islamic charities and detaining Muslims who eventually are found innocent of criminal activity -- all of which leads to a growing perception that the war on terrorism has become a war against Islam.

"I hear a lot of people saying that today, especially moderate Muslims, people I never thought would have this feeling," said Mohamed Magid, imam of the All Dulles Area Muslim Society, a mosque in Sterling.

Echoing other Muslims, Magid said he fears that there is "some element in the [Bush] administration intent on dismantling Muslim organizations and bringing them down. . . . It's very disturbing."

The Los Angeles-based Muslims Public Affairs Council has expressed disappointment that no American Muslims were included in the drafting of the federal 9/11 Commission report, even in sections addressing the United States's relationship with the Muslim world.

"For Muslims, a Beleaguered Feeling"

boo-freakin-hoo
At least Muslims aren't being terrorized by Christians the world-over. Too bad the opposite isn't true.

Actually, the pro-US muslims are so rare that Americans get positively giddy when they find one. Try speaking up for your adopted country, try sending your sons down to the recruiting station and find out just how friendly Americans can be.

And some of us are "disappointed" the President wasn't joking when he referred to Islam as a "Religion of Peace."

In the months following 9/11 Americans went on a spending spree buying books relating to Islam and life in the Middle East.

Osama Bin Laden was reported to have been convinced that this was the start of the Islamization of America. Why else would all those Americans be so interested in Islam?

What he didn't understand was that Americans wanted to better understand their enemy.

Before 9/11 Islam was looked at by Americans as a beign desert religion steeped in mysticism. That all changed after Americans delved into the heart of Islamic religion.

Muslims today are just as ignorant about the feelings of the average American toward Islam as Osama Bin Laden was. Americans better understand the nature of Islam today, and as a result they see muslims as enemies of Western civilization.

Muslims have a right to be afraid as long as they hold onto every belief as written in the Quran.

To make them feel better lets have a National Take a Muslim to lunch day next week. I know some great places for pork sandwiches.

The local ABC affiliate flashed a Ramadan greeting. I took it as a Homeland Security alert.
