Since September 11 Britain has been warned of the 'inevitability' of catastrophic terrorist attack. But has the danger been exaggerated? A major new TV documentary claims that the perceived threat is a politically driven fantasy - and al-Qaida a dark illusion. Andy Beckett reports

Since the attacks on the United States in September 2001, there have been more than a thousand references in British national newspapers, working out at almost one every single day, to the phrase "dirty bomb". There have been articles about how such a device can use ordinary explosives to spread lethal radiation; about how London would be evacuated in the event of such a detonation; about the Home Secretary David Blunkett's statement on terrorism in November 2002 that specifically raised the possibility of a dirty bomb being planted in Britain; and about the arrests of several groups of people, the latest only last month, for allegedly plotting exactly that. Starting next Wednesday, BBC2 is to broadcast a three-part documentary series that will add further to what could be called the dirty bomb genre. But, as its title suggests, The Power of Nightmares: The Rise of the Politics of Fear takes a different view of the weapon's potential.

Talk about having your head stuck in the sand. Oh boy!
The Moore-on factor?
This is the vision that stems down from the liberal mindset. They are incapable of recognizing the threat. They turn it against themselves thinking it's the US'/UK's fault. Like Michael Savage says:
Liberalism is a mental disorder.
Don't think that Kerry doesn't posses these qualities. Twisted.
you mean up their arse!!!
Lefty's have this incredible conviction that if a terror attack breaks out, they will not be targeted. In their calculated wisdom, they are sadly mistaken.
Exactly- and let's remember Kerry seems to expect under his leadership terrorism will turn into a "nuisance"...
We can sign a peace treaty like N Chamberlain did!
That will keep terror away from our doorstep!
NNNAAAWWWW...the BBC is a myth.
"Straussian"
Ugh.
Lefties embracing LaRouche. I've seen this before, a weird mix.
It would seem that last month's Beslan school massacre in Russia escaped their notice. Undoubtedly the good people of Beslan had no idea that Muslim terrorists would strike on their children's first day back to school. And the British won't know what hit them either when their Muslims attack.
Ok the BBC is a nuisance.
They(UK) think that if they play it cool, nothing will happen to them.
If only they don't agitate the fascists.
Of course, if the BBC and the idiots behind this "documentary" are wrong, they have nothing to lose, except perhaps an odd employee here and there.
And, certainly, they will all develop a case of permanent amnesia about this brainstorm.
Never mind that the sandmaggots among them, British citizens and not, daily assault the illusion of safety with real and explicit threats of great destruction and bodily harm. These, in a sick mind, must be dismissed as cultural hyperbole. Right.
One day they will learn what a 'myth' the threat of terrorism is.
I should have been more clear, the growing muslim population within england is overwhelming them.
I am brokenhearted to report he failed.
