SPRINGFIELD, Illinois (AP) -- The Federal Elections Commission fined Alan Keyes' 2000 presidential campaign $23,000 Thursday, and an ethics group filed a new complaint alleging misconduct by his current U.S. Senate campaign.

The FEC found that Keyes took excessive contributions when he sought the Republican presidential nomination in 2000. It ordered him to pay a fine and repay the government $95,302 in public funding that his campaign accepted.

His presidential campaign admitted accepting $168,200 worth of contributions over the individual donation limit, which in 2000 was $1,000 per person. It also acknowledged it had taken at least $15,000 in anonymous contributions, among other violations.

Dr. Keyes is fine by me, boy. Why doesn't Obama just concede now and avoid the public embarrassment?

The crickets on this thread from the absence of certain people are deafening.

Maybe they are silent beause they realize how "progressive,'freedom-loving?',neo-conservatives",will attack with a flurry of supercilious, snide and sarcastic remarks and there is no point in wasting the time trying to defend something that at "face value" can be construed as wrong. It is too complicated and complex to even try to sort out, since truth doesn't matter to the enemies of Keyes anyway.

Face it sinkspur, most of the Keyes supporters are brighter, more genuine and more honest than the opposition. They are also more idealistic which just sets some pragmatists into a fury.

FYI There are about six topics that will trigger the usual sharks to unite and attack.

So they constantly remind me.

Let me guess. You're a Keyes supporter.

Why don't we just make a chart, that shows who always praises Keyes in one column, verses who always derides him in the other, and post it at the start of all the Keyes threads just so everyone can know where everyone else is coming from. :o)

Yeah, the Keyes supporters are better to their pets too. brighter, more genuine and more honest , classic Democratic talking point.

Actually it’s not such a difficult question to answer. He took in over $15 million in 2000, over $8 million from individuals. I’m not sure an error rate of 1% to 2% is that far out of line for a non-professional campaign.

But that’s too simple. Since the beginning of his candidacy the Keyes campaigners have taken as much joy in bashing Republicans, those nasty girlie men RINOs, as they do in bashing Democrats.

It’s all good fun you know.

I wonder if the word "bashing" is maybe too strong a word. Keyes doesn't really strike me as a "Basher", although I could believe people in his campaign could be.

I'd agree, that's why I said Keyes campaigners rather than Keyes, though some of his comments on sinners and Jesus's voting preferences have the potential to drive abay Dem's and Independents.

You summed it up well. Better than I did, in fact. Nice job.

You see, anyone who criticizes Keyes for any reason is automatically an enemy of Keyes...

I just recalled...this is yet another similarity between this campaign and the Peppy Martin campaign for governor in 1999 in KY.

Please provide an exact quote of where Keyes claimed "to be the reincarnation of Moses"?

You do know the FEC has hit Bush-Cheney 2000 too?

Campaign finance law is a joke.

I'm trying to figure out how you make the logical jump from: "It is too complicated and complex to even try to sort out, since truth doesn't matter to the enemies of Keyes anyway"

to: " You see, anyone who criticizes Keyes for any reason is automatically an enemy of Keyes..."????

Show your work man!!!! :o)
