JAKARTA - Indonesian prosecutors on Friday formally charged militant Islamic cleric Abu Bakar Bashir with involvement in a suicide bombing at Jakarta's JW Marriott hotel.

His trial is expected to begin in about two weeks, Yunda Hasbi, an official at the South Jakarta district court told reporters.

If found guilty, Abu Bakar could face the death penalty under Indonesia's anti-terrorism law.

Prosecutors are expected to focus on his alleged leadership of Jemaah Islamiyah, an extremist group authorities say has ties to Al-Qaeda.

Another one charged in Indonesia. This guy will probably get the death penalty. The Indonesians don't give any leniancy to terrorists and drug smugglers because they know the connections and profits are intertwined.

Part of the problem is.

he looks so harmless!

But I'm happy they pursued, charged and arrested him anyway.

They tried to get him for Bali and failed, but they did keep him out of circulation for more than a year on some vaguely related charge. Then he was released from that sentence by some other court order, and the Indonesians promptly threw him into the slammer on something else. Again.

If they can nail him for something he'll hang. Indonesia's new president has presided over several terrorism-related executions in Achea, IIRC.
