CNN's Dobbs May Get Prime-time Slot

CNN's Dobbs May Get Prime-time Slot

In yet another effort to shore up their sagging ratings, CNN's top brass are thinking about giving Lou Dobbs a juicy prime-time spot.

According to New York Daily News business correspondent Phyllis Furman, the network execs are considering moving their top-rated financial commentator's "Lou Dobbs Tonight" show to a higher-profile niche in prime time.

Story Continues Below

"It's being discussed," a CNN exec told the Daily News, which added that the move would not take place until after the November elections. Nor has any specific prime-time spot been decided upon, a CNN source told Furman.

"With the presidential election less than a month away, it's silly to speculate on programming changes," CNN spokesman Matthew Furman told the News.

A jewel in CNN's otherwise lackluster lineup, Dobbs has hit home with his vocal crusade against U.S. companies outsourcing U.S. jobs overseas.

Since the beginning of the summer, ratings for "Lou Dobbs Tonight" have surged 25 percent, to 472,000 households, and Dobbs is outpacing CNN overall, which is up 13 percent, the News revealed. As a result, ad rates for his show are among CNN's highest.

"He's the most familiar financial news personality on television," Horizon Media director of research Brad Adgate told Furman.

But moving Dobbs from his 6 p.m. spot at the end of the business day could be risky, Tom Rosentiel, director of the Project for Excellence in Journalism, told the News. "The prime-time audience has a different mind-set."

Moreover, Dobbs, who refuses to comment on the matter, may not be interested in any move from his current spot, CNN insiders told the News.

He doesn't support either of them. He's actually stated that he simply might not vote in this election..he doesn't like the choices.

He's doing a series, Broken Borders, which is pretty good. I don't watch it regularly, but I manage to catch it from time to time.

All of the above. He's a Constitutionalist, pro-life, pro-property rights, pro-gun, less government, against Supremes legislating from the bench, etc.

I assume you mean how do I know what he stands for? By watching the show.

Check out his website: http://www.cnn.com/CNN/Programs/lou.dobbs.tonight/

You can read transcripts of his show..link on lower left.

He has Republican candidate Kris Kobach of Kansas on as we speak.

You tell me since you are the one who stated he is NOT a conservative.

From what I know about the man, he is fundamentally
conservative: pro-gun, pro life.

Mrs. Dobbs was found to be carrying a weapon at an airport last year. She was packing heat and got caught. We never heard another word. What happened to Mrs. Lou Dobbs?

Hint: Dobbs wears a small American flag on his lapel, even when many in the news media were criticizing those who did, and few anchors except on Fox did so.

"Dobbs is annoying, a bit of populist, and not a particularly good business anchor in my opinion"

Why is being a populist a bad thing. Populists are people who care about us little folks who work for a living getting screwed over by the big and the powerful. This is something mainstream conservatives and liberals alike both ignore. He's the only business anchor I know with the guts to point out the perils of outsourcing and the loss of our manufacturing base. Compared to Lou Dobbs, Kudlow and Cramer are just cheerleaders for the status quo.

Kudlow and Cramer are great. Their format makes the show work well. I would like them at FOX too. I read somewhere that FOX was going to start a business channel. Maybe there is hope. Cavuto is the king and FOX's Sat. morning business block is good but I would like to see more business coverage there.

.....some sort of 'ethical' problems.....

I think it was his continued anti-Clinton Editorials, stories and interviews that caused a rift between Dobbs and CNN.
