October 15, 2004 -- TEMPE, Ariz. — Vice President Dick Cheney, calling himself an "angry father," yesterday blasted John Kerry for mentioning that Cheney's daughter is gay during the presidential debate."You saw a man who will do and say anything to get elected," Cheney said at a rally in Florida. "And I am not just speaking as a father here, although I am a pretty angry father."
Cheney told a local TV station, "I thought it was totally inappropriate."
The growing controversy began during the presidential debate on Wednesday when Kerry was asked whether homosexuality is a choice.

Mary Cheney, who is openly gay and works for her father's campaign, declined to comment.
But her sister, Elizabeth Cheney, appearing on CNN last night, said her family was outraged.
"I think that it was out of bounds for Sen. Kerry to exploit the child of his opponent to make a political point," she said.
"I, like many Americans across the country today, are wondering what kind of a man would do that.
"It was very offensive - and I think I'll just leave it there."

Kerry and Edwards shattered the established tradition that candidates don't invoke the private life of a candidate's family where no wrongdoing is involved. Republicans suggested it was a Democratic ploy to play on homophobia and scare away the conservative Christians who are a central part of Bush's political base.
But Kerry spokeswoman Debra DeShong told Fox News Channel: "The Republicans are the ones who use gay issues to divide America." She cited a recent Republican National Committee flier that said Democrats would ban the Bible and allow gay marriage.

I seem to recall that the Clinton's made a pact with the media and EVERYONE that their daughter was OFF LIMITS.

I agree that remark is shameful teletech. Can you imagine how that remark plays with mothers?? Not only did dizzy lizzy have the audacity to assume she would KNOW how Lynne Cheney feels about her own daughter. But any Mother, or Father as well, is not going to feel shame for their daughter about being gay.
I'm a social conservative through and through, but I tell my daughters all the time that I want them to do right and I want them to do good, but there is nothing on this earth that they could ever do that would ever change how much I love them.
