Don't know about the authenticity of that quote (there are a lot of things attributed to Lincoln that he probably never said), but if it is true then Abe was a flaming hypocrite. In 1846 he was a congressman who opposed the Mexican War effort. His most famous speech that year gave direct aid and comfort to the Mexicans who had invaded Texas land to the north of the Rio Grande and attacked American troops.

Of course, Abe was perfecting willing to criticize the Mexican-American war while it was in progress and many peacenik freepers did the same the Kosovo war. Traitors all!
