I really don't think Kerry was making a joke. The comment I married up is often used by men as a compliment to their wives. It is really a pretty trite statement. It's a theft of Reagan's statement, related again by BPM Brian Mulroney at Reagan's funeral. IE, Reagan turned to Mulroney and said it about both of their wives.
Nancy Reagan was very pleased with that comment.
However, Mulroney could relate it, he's got the gift of gab. Kerry doesn't.

Great memory. You are exactly right. Reagan used to use it all of the time, only he wasn't talking about Nancy's money. Brian Mulroney and Ronald Reagan were real Irishmen with the gift of gab, not an ersatz Irishman with a phony name.
