Has Mussina pitched as well all year as he did last evening?
I was flipping back and forth and he was perfect for 6 Innings or so. I blinked and then there were men on and it was almost tied up late in the game by Ortiz just as I put it back on. That ball missed being a homer by not very much.
I am not a big Sox fan as I was when I was a kid, but it appears that Red Sox nation is being set up again for another fall.
No hit perfect ball for six innings in the 1st game of a championship series? Wow!

Pedro should and will just pitch his heart out and let the chips fall where they may. I predict he'll go six full innings and give up four or five runs.

Thanks for the post. The Red Sox need to win one of the next two to make this a series. I expect them to win tonight, but if they don't, they need to go into Fenway Park and win the next two. That would be a 2-2 series tie. It really depends and which Jon Lieber shows up tonight. The overall average Jon Lieber that pitched with Pittsburgh and the Cubs, or the Jon Lieber that pitched reasonably well against the Twins.

The word in Boston is that Schilling will need surgery after the season is over. They are going to try a different kind of brace on his ankle and he'll try to start game 5 if needed.

The Red Sox will choke; they may choke in the victory parade, but they'll choke.

Since we'll likely have Lowe in Game 5, it's Petey or bust. We lose tonight and it's over. We can win the ALCS only if we win 2 out of 3 @ Fenway. Then, we have Pedro and Bronson to steal a game in NYC.

I would think he probably would too. That kind of situation (pitching through injuries) is common with pitchers.

He ended up with a 5.40 ERA. He's pitched better. What he did before the collapse isn't in a vacuum. Pedro would have won Game 7 if you just count the first 7 innings.

You have to give a little credit to Mussina, but for the most part the Red Sox were very impatient last night. They were swinging at balls well out of the strike zone, and this is somewhat unusual for a team that has made a name for themselves by being patient, working the counts, and making the opposing pitcher work. For example, Damon struck out on the first three pitches he saw to start the game, something unusual for a lead-off hitter that normally looks at a lot of pitches and works the count.
I credit some of it to the long lay off after sweeping the Angels and for getting out of their normally patient philosophy.

Can you believe baseball is so stupid as to not stagger the games tonight?

Hey, where is that Manny Ortiz fella in the Sox lineup? :-)
To: ProudVet77
Schilling tore a ligament in his ankle in last week's start v. the Angels. It is currently rubbing across his ankle bone, twanging like a guitar string every time it moves across the bone. He's listed as "doubtful" for the rest of the series by ESPN. :-(

Incredibly greedy and arrogant. "We don't need no stinkin' fans."
To: Founding Father
MLB is, of course, stupid enough to do most anything stupid you could imagine.

I don't care much for baseball anymore, but I hope the Yankees beat the Red Sox like a drum. Miserable New Englanders put a BIG SMILE on my face in the morning.
