In many states (I don't know about New York), it's perfectly legal to tape phone calls as long as one of the participants agrees to it while the other participant doesn't have to know.
I can't help but notice that the tales of extortion, talk of "evil," and and countersuit itself do nothing to deny that, in fact, any or all of it didn't actually take place.
