Three associations endorse Henry Cuellar
Times Staff Reports
Laredo attorney Henry Cuellar, Democratic candidate for U.S. Congressional District 28, has been endorsed by several organizations in recent weeks.
The Texas Farm Bureau, Combined Law Enforcement Associations of Texas and the National Rifle Association have announced their support for the former Texas secretary of state and former state representative.
"The farmers and ranchers of District 28 Congressional District stand behind Mr. Cuellar in his bid for the District 28 seat," said Kenneth Dierschke, president of the Texas Farm Bureau's Friends of Agriculture Fund Inc.
Dierschke praised Cuellar for his "excellent leadership and initiative" during his tenure in the Texas Legislature, 1987-2001.
Charley Wilkison, CLEAT political and legislative director, lauded Cuellar's "strong support of law enforcement officers and their issues."
"Henry Cuellar is dedicated to working with CLEAT in developing a common interest, pro-law enforcement policy among cities and communities that will help to create a better environment for citizens living in the 28th Congressional District and the greater state of Texas alike," Wilkison said.
For its part, the NRA's Political Victory Fund chairman, Chris W. Cox, cited Cuellar's "strong commitment to protecting our Second Amendment rights, as demonstrated by his pro-gun voting record" in the Texas House as the reason for supporting Cuellar.
Cuellar, 49, is opposed in the November general election by Republican James F. Hopson, 58, of Seguin and Libertarian Ken Ashby, 52, of Dallas.
Hopson, a tax attorney, has received the backing of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.
For the 2004 congressional race, District 28 stretches from Zapata at its southern end to Hays County just south of Austin at its northern end. It includes the part of Webb County that's east of I-35, much of southern and eastern Bexar County and includes the cities of Cotulla, Pearsall San Marcos and Seguin, among others.
