What accounts for the 6 yrs between '72 and 78? It was normal for someone not to receive their HD for all that time?

Yes. I resigned my commission in 1972 and was transferred into the Standby Reserves the same year. I recieved my Honorable Discharge on Feb 16, 1978, the same date as Kerry who also was transferred into the Standby Reserves in 1972.
