I believe that they are required to have a canteen available to buy sundrey items like pepsi and shaving cream.

That's exactly right. Unless a turban and a suicide bomb belt is now considered a "uniform" then Geneva does not apply to these people.
Also, the uniform must display a clear insignia. I'd like for Human Rights Watch to tell us what the Al Qaeda insignia looks like.
