I wanted to thank you for recommending Carl Hiaasen. I picked up a copy of Skinny Dip over the weekend, started it last night, and am loving it. I'm planning to hit the bookstores on my lunch hour today hoping to find more of Hiaasen's first edition hard covers to add to our home library. Thanks again and please recommend additional authors as we seem to have similar tastes.

My pleasure. Try Phillip Kerr's early work, the Berlin Trilogy. Not too funny but great crime writing based on a German Detective working in pre-war, wartime and post-war Germany. Kerr's work slid downhill after these but, in my opinion, they are good enough on their own to make him a modern semi-classic of the genre.

Also, any pre-Get Shorty Elmore Leonard and some selective post GS work. Almost everything Leonard writes has cinematic qualities and most have been filmed. When I saw Pulp Fiction and everyone lauded it as break through work I thought, QT read everything Leonard ever wrote and poured it into this film. A later interview QT did verified that by his admission so. Happy reading...

Just a reminder, Nelson DeMille's Night Fall is now available for purchase. I picked up a copy yesterday and wanted to share the "Author's Note" with you:

This is a work of fiction, based on fact: the crash of TWA flight 800 that occurred off Long Island, New York on July 17, 1996.

The characters in this novel are fictional, though there are passing references to actual persons.

The events of July 17, 1996, that I describe in this book, and the subsequent investigation of the crash, are based on published accounts as well as my own interviews with investigators who worked on this case, and my interviews with eyewitnesses to the crash.

The official cause of the crash is mechanical failure, though there are conflicting theories that point toward more sinister causes of this tragedy. I've tried to represent all sides of this controversy, and to be accurate in regard to the eyewitness accounts, the forensic evidence, and the details of the subsequent investigation. I have, however, taken dramatic liberties and literary license in cases where there is conflicting evidence.

A good read but it leaves you with an empty, unfinished feeling.

I agree. Just finished it over the weekend. I'm actually confused ... is Demille saying that Ted Nash and the boys engineered that scene at the end? (trying not to give away any spoilers)

I've been trying to figure out how to respond to your post without ruining the story for our fellow freepers. I think DeMille engineered the scene in an attempt to fictionalize facts and avoid joining the Clinton Body Count. /tin foil

Yep, Atlantic Ocean it is. Also, just after TWA 800 exploded, our local News12 Long Island tv station fielded live on-air phone calls and reports from witnesses who saw something hit the plane. Some callers referred to it as a possible small plane that hit TWA 800.

News12 kept reporting it early on as a collision with a small plane because of this. So, it was clear moments after the crash that witnesses saw something hit TWA 800. But the story changed by the next day...

It was rather strange that on the day after the TWA800 disaster, an Admiral was flown in from Washington to handle all the press conferences. I found that puzzling!

I have read most of DeMille's books. Most are truly great.
My top recommendation is 'Word of Honor'.
By the way, Nelson is a Vietnam veteran.
