Most of those mine fields were cleared using either penal battalions (which even had former generals in them) or Mongols. Hay, some times that's just how it goes. You attack a defended position, where do you think the mine field is going to be? It's going to be on the most likeliest avenues of approach and if the enemy has enough time and mines, it will be along the whole front of the enemy field. Then, you cover those mine fields with field emplacements and arcs of fire.

Guess what, by the time you call up the engineers to carefully clear those minefields, the offensive is over and you are all dead.

There were no miclics back then and for your information, the US Army, from first hand experience, practices crossing minefields all the time. When the first tank blows up, the second tank drives up and pushes it forward, using it to clear the rest of the lane.
