Military warned of terror threat - paper
http://www.reuters.co.uk/newsPackageArticle.jhtml?type=topNews&storyID=612592&section=news

LONDON (Reuters) - Intelligence services have warned military personnel to be on heightened guard against possible terrorist attacks, the Sunday Telegraph reported.

The paper said a leaked September 2004 report, one section of which was titled "Terrorist Targeting of Military Bases", was distributed to garrisons across the United Kingdom.

The report said there was a "real" threat to servicemen and advised them not to wear uniform in public "especially in the vicinity of home or while travelling on public transport," the Telegraph said.

The risk is "more pertinent in London", the paper quoted the document as saying.

The only evidence cited for the increased alert was a series of incidents in which men of Middle Eastern origin were seen taking photos outside military barracks, the paper said.

Britain is considered a top target for groups like Osama bin Laden's al Qaeda because of London's support for the invasion of Iraq and the U.S.-led "war on terror."

Alerts are relatively common and senior officials have said a domestic terrorist attack is inevitable.

Government officials declined to comment on the Sunday Telegraph report, which quoted a spokesman for MI5 as saying it was normal procedure to investigate any unusual incidents.

"This is suspicious behaviour and in the current climate these activities must be followed up," the spokesman said.

Thanks for the ping to this...I haven't noticed it mentioned at all on the broadcast media here.

Meantime here's a weird story. There's no suggestion at all that it is terrorism-related at this stage, but it's quite an unusual occurrence. This is a main network radio transmitter, its collapse leaves hundreds of thousands of listeners in the East of England without radio reception.

Mast fire 'could be deliberate'

Some FM radio services in parts of the east of England have been affected after a transmitter caught fire.

The 580ft mast at Morborne, Peterborough, Cambs, caught fire on Saturday, collapsing onto transmitter buildings and neighbouring fields.

Radios 1,2, 3 and 4, BBC Radio Cambridgeshire, BBC digital radio and Classic FM were all affected, along with some mobile telephone reception.

Detectives think the fire may have been deliberate and appealed for witnesses.
