The Threat Matrix

The title refers to a daily report given to the president of the United States detailing the most serious terrorist threats against the country. To tackle those threats, the government has formed a top-notch task force to infiltrate the terror cells and cut off the danger.

"Every morning, the president receives a list of the top ten terrorist threats - this list is known as the threat matrix."

We here at FR are trying to be in conjunction with the daily reports around the world that involve threats. We try to provide a storehouse of information that takes hours of research.

ATLANTA (CNN) -- As more than one billion Muslims prepare to celebrate Ramadan, terror experts are mixed about whether the holy month is a tool for recruiting terrorists.

Some terrorism experts and Islamic scholars say Ramadan gives extremists an opportunity to enlist new recruits.

"It's a time which can be exploited by radical clerics to motivate individuals into taking action on the basis they are somehow serving their religion," says terror expert M.J. Gohel.

And analysts see another temptation for terrorists: exploiting the Battle of Badr, a symbolic date in Muslim history, which falls near the U.S. presidential election.

UBL seemed so 'scripted' and said things in such a different demeanor and wording

I agree, Piper, but if I were sending specific messages about specific operations I would be carefully scripted as well. And, I may need a tinfoil hat but even UBL's hand gestures seemed perfunctory...to such an extent that I got the feeling the text and motions were - in conjunction - specific "orders".

I really hope I just need a tin foil hat (Make it a medium, please).....
but I don't really believe I do.

Add that to the fact that UBL's tape could be interpreted as having been meant for release after election day, I find that significant.

After the first tape came out from threatening that blood would run through the streets we were discussing the post that talked about watching the attack unfold on the media. I've been following this thread closely since the tape story unfolded and I don't think this has been posted yet, my apologies if it has. It is at Velveeta's post 755 on Thread Two. Of course, it is from Daleel so take it for what it's worth. It does mention some of the points OBL made in his tape. In any case, it's an interesting flashback.

As I am re-reading Post 755 from Thread Two, it is chilling in that the points made are almost identical to those of OBL in the his new tape.

Fox news mentioned earlier that it is possible Yasser Arafat's illness is due to being poisoned and the Palestinians are investigating. Especially since he fell ill whilst eating soup. That's a good possibility but there could be a lot more places or things it implies. Right now I think the best thing to do is try to figure out what those initials could mean & keep an eye on the top ten most likely you come up with.

I noticed that also. I think it is the first time I have seen TR on television in anything less than a french cuff shirt and nice navy suit. You give off a much more relaxed feeling if you stroll out in your Saturday business casual.

I'm looking at an Islamic events calendar 2004 that says the 1st Eid-Al-Adha was on February 2 and the 2nd Eid-Al-Fitr will be on November 14.

I heard an AP report on the radio that said DHS was going to leave the level at Orange for the nation. So somewhere they got their colors wrong.

The only color change I am hoping for is enough red states to counter Kerry's blue states and keeping GWB in the Whitehouse.

Yes, it was in the afternoon on Saturday. He said something along the lines of "the terror alert level will remain at code orange despite a new tape..." I caught the mistake b/c I am not in an Orange location. It was the reporter, not Ridge that was talking.

On Jill's site she has info about OBL tape that says, "Osama Endorsing Kerry......says that if the US states want security, then it is up to each state....the states where Bush wins will not be secure!!!!!!!! More to come!" Is this what OBL's statement about sparing certain states menas?

O.K, I see where the confusion lies. I suspect they'll still go to orange nationwide before the election. I think they held off on Saturday so as not to give Osama the satisfaction.

It's interesting to note how they describe Osama's change in appearance and demeanor on his new tape, for example, in their recent missiveThe Sheik Osama Inaugurated a New Strategy for Dismantling America from Jill's site.

I'm paraphrasing freely since it's a machine translation.

It begins:

"Wrapped in a golden cloak (the prince) steps up to the podium and quietly reads his statement Prime Minister style."

And it ends:

"Written history will record this golden upright Muslim Arab leader threatening the very heads of Rome at their military peak of power in a scene this nation didn't live hundreds of years ago."

They call him "the iman Osama Bin Laden" several times and "the leading sheikh" (along with Zawahiri) as well.

I think the next thing to look for is another tape. I think the next tape, if there is one, is the final signal that an attack could be imminent. Remember, the warnings several months back said we would watch the attack from Satellite transmission from our TV and that we would get a couple of minutes warning. See post 755 at TM thread two.

Any conspiracy theories going on why now of all times these 2 tapes were released? Who is behind them?

With 90% certainity I think the two tapes now are authentic. Judging from the jihadi chatter and suprise over the first one and the key context from both (we are going to give a pause so you can vote for Kerry), Jill put the dots together the best. The ABC tape was the word from the operatives that all was ready and in place. OBL tape was the message received and execute. I think that they knew that the timing would be noticed by many (4 days before the election) inrelation to Spain and Chechnya.

Some one else made the observation that if Kerry wins, OBL may extend the 'European truce' offer to the US before striking after the election.

My gut feeling is that there is a higher probability of a hit Wed-Fri after the election and if we get thru the election without a hit, the alert level will be raised to Orange late Tuesday, although most LEO will probably be near that level Tuesday anyway.
