The Threat Matrix

The title refers to a daily report given to the president of the United States detailing the most serious terrorist threats against the country. To tackle those threats, the government has formed a top-notch task force to infiltrate the terror cells and cut off the danger.

"Every morning, the president receives a list of the top ten terrorist threats - this list is known as the threat matrix."

We here at FR are trying to be in conjunction with the daily reports around the world that involve threats. We try to provide a storehouse of information that takes hours of research.

ATLANTA (CNN) -- As more than one billion Muslims prepare to celebrate Ramadan, terror experts are mixed about whether the holy month is a tool for recruiting terrorists.

Some terrorism experts and Islamic scholars say Ramadan gives extremists an opportunity to enlist new recruits.

"It's a time which can be exploited by radical clerics to motivate individuals into taking action on the basis they are somehow serving their religion," says terror expert M.J. Gohel.

And analysts see another temptation for terrorists: exploiting the Battle of Badr, a symbolic date in Muslim history, which falls near the U.S. presidential election.

You mention that these devices are also used to x-ray piping systems. The "CRN' message from Imperialists post creates an interesting link. This is the second device of this type that has just "shown up" recently in Chicago. The first was tossed from a car back in August and led to the evacuation of part of a neighborhood.

Medical waste in truck set off radioactive alarm

CHICAGO -- A Chicago Streets and Sanitation garbage truck that set off radioactivity alarms at a West Side transfer yard was carrying medical waste containing low levels of iodine.

Investigators from the Illinois Emergency Management Agency's nuclear safety unit responded Monday to a yard at 750 N. Kilbourn Avenue, said spokeswoman Patti Thompson.

Investigators determined that the truck, which had been collecting garbage from residences, had picked up waste used by someone in a medical procedure, Thompson said. Detectors determined the truck was carrying iodine-131, used in chemotherapy sessions, among other things, she said.

On Monday, a Chicago Fire Department spokesman erroneously reported that the waste was from a building site and that federal investigators were being called in.

New Drugs Used by Beslan Terrorists Puzzle Russian Experts

The terrorists who took over 1,000 people hostage at a school in southern Russia last month used more than just heroin, the head of a parliamentary committee investigating the Beslan siege told journalists.

As MosNews reported on Monday, the results of forensic tests, released by local prosecutor Nikolai Shepel, showed what would normally have been deadly doses of heroin and morphine in most of the 32 terrorists.

But Senator Alexander Torshin, who heads the Beslan investigation committee, told Ekho Moskvy radio Tuesday that heroin was not enough to produce that kind of behavior in the hostage-takers, and that they must have used new kinds of drugs.

In particular, Torshin cited the militants’ ability to continue fighting despite being badly wounded and presumably in great pain.

“We got a response from the general prosecutor’s office, which said the substance used was heroin,” Torshin told the radio station. “But I’m not satisfied with the response, because we know pretty much about the effects of heroin, and about the effects of other narcotics.”

“I think something absolutely new was used there,” he added, speaking of the terrorists who reportedly ingested unknown substances during the siege.

The parliamentary committee set out once again on Monday for Beslan, a town in southern Russia’s North Ossetia where over 330 people died in the three-day hostage drama, to gather new information.

Earlier, following last week’s trip to the grieving town, Torshin announced that some of the information they learned was “too scary to reveal”

Six charged with supplying fake ids to immigrants (Chicago)

CHICAGO (AP) -- Six men of Middle Eastern descent from the Chicago area were charged with helping illegal immigrants trying to conceal their legal status obtain fraudulent Social Security cards and Illinois driver's licenses, prosecutors said.

HUNDREDS (emphasis added) of people used addresses associated with the defendants to secure the fake documents, according to a criminal complaint made public Tuesday in U.S. District Court.(snip)

WATERBURY -- Police in Waterbury are responding to a home where a man has found a missile in the basement.

The state police bomb squad is on the scene at Congress and Bank streets which are closed in both directions.
