American Taxpayers Funding Health Care in Mexico ('cause ours is so cheap ??)

TheU. S. government is spending a lot of money for medical equipment…in Mexico. The idea is to improve health care across the border so fewer Mexican citizens will seek it here legally or illegally. On Monday, October 11, 2004, Secretary of Health and Human Services Tommy Thompson met with Mexican President Vicente Fox. The secretary then traveled to Nogales, Sonora to showcase a hospital where American taxpayers are pumping in well over a million dollars for new equipment and a couple of operating rooms.

Before a crowd of a thousand people, Thompson stressed the importance of getting health care to everyone especially Mexico's poorest. The secretary and Congressman Jim Kolbe toured Nogales, Sonora's general hospital which has been getting much needed improvements with money from the United States. More than 350-thousand dollars worth of equipment has been already been donated by the U.S. government with more on the way, “as a demonstration of our friendship and support,” Thompson told the crowd, “we are going to be funding the purchase of a CT scanner to help the hospital treat head trauma patients and we’ll be bringing in a million dollars to do that.”

That’s a lot of money, especially when you consider the financial trouble Tucson’s very own trauma care system faces. Tucson Medical Center shut down its trauma unit because of costs leaving only UMC to serve all of southern Arizona. So how does Secretary Thompson justify spending money on Mexico’s health care system when the United States could obviously use the money itself? “well, the truth of the matter is,” he told me, “those pessimists, who are always complaining out there criticizing, who eat grapefruit for breakfast and suck lemons all day,

What we’re doing is reaching out and you got to realize disease knows no borders.”

Thompson says " they’re always out there complaining about everything and never coming up with any realistic answers."

Well, my *realistic* suggestion would be for MEXICAN TAXPAYERS to foot the heath costs of poor MEXICANS in MEXICO

This is stupid. Most Mexicans come here illegally for jobs and money - healthcare is just a fringe benefit. It's nice and good and all, but it won't stanch the migration problem one bit.

Oh yea - I can't believe I'll vote for Bush this election. I will, but I'll retch in the booth.

Its time to conquer Mexico if we have to pay their bills.

Don't they have any pride or self-respect?
